Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Come Up Short at Penn State

For the second game of the weekend in Happy Valley, PA the Clarkson University Hockey team opened the scoring, but unfortunately for the Golden Knights that would be their only tally as 16th-ranked Penn State strung together five unanswered goals Friday night for a 5-1 victory at Pegula Ice Arena.

Ranked 17th in the nation entering its season-opening weekend, Clarkson lost to the Nittany Lions 4-3 on Thursday. The Knights open the home slate at Cheel Arena next weekend hosting Wisconsin and Holy Cross.

Sophomore Grant Cooper (Cornwall, ONT), who missed the entire second half of last season with an injury, is back at full strength and put the Green and Gold on scoreboard first. After scoring twice in the exhibition win over Guelph last Saturday, Cooper connected for his first official goal of the year just 3:33 into the game, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with junior co-captain Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany). Senior assistant captain Marly Quince (Sioux Lookout, ONT) also assisted on Cooper's third career goal.

After that it was all Nittany Lions as the home team scored twice in the first period, added two more in the middle frame and sealed the deal with an empty-net goal in the third.

Just over a minute after Cooper's goal, Penn State struck twice in a 62-second span with both goals coming off faceoff wins to the left side of Clarkson junior goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN). Alex Limoges and Aarne Talvitie tallied at 4:45 and 5:47, respectively, to get things rolling for Penn State.

Nikita Pavlychev continued the scoring for the Big10 foe with a rebound goal at 5:20 of the second period, followed by a breakaway score from Brandon Biro at 13:13 for a 4-1 Penn State lead through 40 minutes.

Clarkson pulled Kielly for the extra attacker with 4:14 remaining in regulation, but Chase Berger but an end to any thoughts of a Green and Gold rally with an empty-net goal at 16:06.

The Knights held a 36-35 edge in shots. Kielly finished with 30 saves.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play and shut down the Nittany Lions on their only man-advantage attempt
