Clarkson Knocks Off 13th Ranked Wisconsin in Home Opener

The home opener at Cheel Arena for the Clarkson University Hockey team turned out to be a big success as the Golden Knights won their first game of the season, knocking of 13th-ranked Wisconsin 4-2 before a crowd of 3,165.

Clarkson will look to build upon its momentum when it hosts Holy Cross on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Postgame audio Head Coach Casey Jones

Two sophomores and a pair of freshmen, with their first career goals, accounted for the Knights' scoring and junior goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) was in top form with 26 saves in the victory over the Big10 Badgers.

Sophomore Grant Cooper (Cornwall, ONT) and freshman Josh Dunne (O'Fallon, MO) scored in the first period for a 2-0 Clarkson lead. Kielly was especially sharp in the opening 20 minutes shutting down Wisconsin, which entered the game tied for second in the nation in scoring, averaging five goals a game, making 12 first-period stops.

Cooper started things off just 2:57 in with his second goal of the season, firing in a shot from the slot after a nice feed from behind the net by junior Nico Sturm (Augsburg, German). Sophomore Jack Jacome (Caledon, ONT) started the play with hard work in the corner to free the puck to Sturm.

With nine seconds left in their first power play of the night, Dunne redirected a pass from the left circle by junior Haralds Egles (Liepaia, Latvia) at the top of the crease for his first career point. Junior Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) also assisted.

Midway through the middle frame, Clarkson ran into penalty trouble with three straight infractions, including a five-minute major. The Badgers' Sean Dhooghe, connected for a power-play marker at 10:56 to pull the visitors within one.

Sixty-eight seconds into the third frame, Dhooghe scored again to tie the game 2-2.

The Green and Gold battled back and scored twice late in the period to pull out the victory. Sophomore Kevin Charyszyn (Jamison, PA) took a behind-the-net pass from Dunne and lifted in a shot from the right side at 13:28. Freshman defenseman Brian Hurley (Dellwood, MN) also assisted on the game-winning goal.

With 3:55 remaining Hurley added an insurance marker, a power-play tally for his first collegiate goal with Sturm and Jacome setting up the score with their second assists of the night.

Clarkson finished 2-4 on the power play and killed off four of the Badgers five man-advantage chances.
