In a game that developed into a wild shootout in the early going of the third period between two of the top teams in the nation, the Clarkson University Hockey team fell one goal short in its season opener, losing 4-3 at Penn State on Thursday night.

Ranked 17th in the national polls, the Golden Knights will close out their road trip to Happy Valley, PA with a 7:00 p.m. game against the 16th-ranked Nittany Lions on Friday at the Pegula Ice Arena.

After scoring just one goal each through the first 40 minutes, the two Top 20-ranked teams combined for four goals in the opening 3:12 of the third period.

Penn State grabbed a 2-1 lead 91 seconds into the final frame with a power-play goal from Liam Folkes. The Knights tied it up at 1:50 when junior Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) took a pass from classmate Devin Brosseau, split the defense and lifted in a shot while charging down the slot. Sophomore defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) also assisted.

Penn State regained the lead on a shorthanded tally by Nate Sucese at 2:23.

Clarkson came right back 49 seconds later when junior defenseman Greg Moro (Edmonton, ALB) fired in a blast from between the circles, finishing off assists from senior defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) and freshman center Nick Campoli (Toronto, ONT).

The Nittany Lions were able to come away with the victory on their home ice with a goal by Brandon Biro. Standing at the top of the crease Biro slapped in a shot, and after a lengthy video review by the officials was awarded the goal at 11:01.

After a scoreless first period, Clarkson started the scoring in its first season-opening game on the road in four years with a goal by junior Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) at 2:16 of the middle frame.

Sturm crashed the net and knocked in pass front by Egle for the game's first goal. Thow recorded his first assist of the night to start the scoring play.

Sam Stemschein connected on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity to tie the game for Penn State at 9:10 of the second period.

The Nittnay Lions outshot the Green and Gold 32-26. Junior Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) posted 28 saves.

Specialty teams played a key role in the game as Penn State was 2-of-3 on the power play along with scoring a shorthanded marker. The Knights were 1-of-2 with the man-advantage.
