Knights Defeat #10 Penn State in Season Opener

By knocking off 10th-ranked Penn State 2-1 at Cheel Arena on Friday night for its first win over a Big 10 program, Clarkson University Hockey open the 2017-18 campaign on a highly successful note.

Sophomore goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) was stellar in the Golden Knights' crease with a 38-save effort as the Nittany Lions outshot the Green and Gold 39-21. Kielly was at his best in the latter stages of the game when Clarkson was holding a one-goal lead. He posted 31 saves over the final 40 minutes, including 16 in the third period.

Junior Marly Quince (Sioux Lookout, ONT) and senior defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) provided the goals as Clarkson never trailed in the contest.

Just moments after the opening faceoff Quince capitalized on a Penn State mistake to give the Knights the early lead. Senior defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) forced a turnover on a Nittany Lions' breakout and junior Juho Jokiharju (Tampere, Finland) picked up the loose puck. Jokiharju sent a pass across the crease to his linemate Quince, who ripped a shot from the bottom of the right circle for his fourth career goal at 14 seconds.

The Knights made it 2-0 at 13:24 of the middle frame on a shot from the right point by Summers. The play started on a great rush by sophomore Sheldon Rempal (Calgary, ALB). Amorosa picked up his second assist of the night with a pass on the blueline to Summers.

Penn State got on the board with a power-play tally just over a minute later on a tip-in goal by Brandon Biro at 14:40.

The visitors forced the play late in the game and pulled their goaltender with 1:43 to play, but Kielly and the Knights held off the Penn State rush to gain the season-opening victory.

Clarkson went 0-of-2 on the power play, while the Nittany Lions were 1-of-4 with the man-advantage.
