Knights Complete Weekend Sweep of Big 10 Foes with 3-0 Shutout over Michigan

Sophomore Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) and the rest of the Golden Knights proved to be inhospitable hosts to the University of Michigan in the Wolverines first visit to Potsdam in nearly 60 years as the Clarkson University Hockey blanked the Big 10 foe 3-0 on Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which also defeated 10th-ranked Penn State 2-1 on Friday, opens its 96th season at 2-0.

Kielly posted 29 saves for his fourth career shutout and the Knights received a balanced offensive effort with three different goal scorers. Michigan, which defeated St. Lawrence 3-1 in Canton on Friday, outshot the Green and Gold 29-19, but the Clarkson penalty-killing units, backstopped by Kielly, were in top form killing off all eight of the Wolverines' power-play chances. The Knights went 1-of-7 with the man-advantage.

Clarkson gained the advantage early, taking a 2-0 first period lead.

Senior Dylan Gareau (Richmond, ONT) opened the scoring with his first goal since February 2016.  Gareau took a pass from junior Marly Quince (Sioux Lookout, ONT) at center ice skated into the Michigan zone and fired a hard shot from the top of the circle that beat Wolverine goaltender Hayden Lavigne at 7:16. Freshman defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) also assisted for his first collegiate point.

The Knights connected on the power play just over a minute later with senior defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) converting a pass from sophomore Sheldon Rempal (Calgary, ALB) at 8:23 for his first goal of the season. Senior blueline partner Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) also assisted.

Midway through the middle frame after some substantial pressure from Michigan, Clarkson was able to clear the zone and connect for its third goal. Senior captain Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT) knocked in a shot from in front off assists from Quince and Amorosa at 11:40 for a 3-0 Green and Gold lead heading into the final period.

Clarkson did a good job, limiting the Wolverines' chances over the final 20 minutes, allowing only five shots on Kielly. The Knights once again did a solid job blocking shots recording 10.

Clarkson takes to the road next weekend with a weekend series in Kalamazoo, MI against NCHC foe Western Michigan.
