Knights Score 21 in Doubleheader Sweep of Morrisville

Potsdam, NY – Capitalizing on offense early in both games, the Clarkson University Softball team picked up its first sweep of the season, downing Morrisville State 11-3 and 10-1, each in five innings, Wednesday afternoon at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-22 on the season, but won't have long to bask in the winning glow for long, as Clarkson is on the road for a pair of games on Thursday against Castleton.

Clarkson recorded three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first coming around on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Lexi Rydelek. Ry Garcia then drove in another with a sacrifice fly, and Ryleigh Fontana delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-1.

Morrisville responded with a run in the top of the second on a one-out single by Jaiden Bellinger, with Kendall Cuyler cutting down a second would-be run with a dart from center to the plate. Clarkson got the run back in the bottom half of the frame as Emily Martin singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and then scored on a groundout by Ivy Borkoski, putting the tally at 4-1.

Clarkson broke the game open in the third thanks to a three-run shot to left by Maddie Throumoulos, scoring both Ry Garcia and Ryleigh Fontana. Another run came around on an RBI single by Isabel Haspil for an 8-1 lead. Morrisville picked up two in the top of the fifth off a two-run homer to left from Erin Luther, but the Knights made sure the game would end early with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. A long fly ball to left was dropped, allowing Karyssa Parker to score off the would-be sacrifice fly, and Isabel Haspil also scored on the play. A few pitches later, Molly Hagymasi scored on a wild pitch to end the contest.

Isabel Haspil went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk in the first game, while Ivy Borkoski, Ryleigh Fontana, and Emily Martin each had two hits. Maddie Throumoulos drove in three with her home run and Lexi Rydelek also drove in a pair. Bella Hotchkiss gained the win by going 4.1 innings.

Game two was a repeat of the first, though this time Clarkson scored six in its first at bat, as the team strung together several doubles to the gaps. Lexi Rydelek doubled in Ivy Borkoski, then Fontana plated Rydelek. Kelsea Flanagan followed with a double to score Fontana, and Throumoulos hit a liner to left center to score Flanagan. Kendall Cuyler singled in Throumoulos, and Cuyler finished the circuit on a single from Emily Martin, making it 6-0 early.

Clarkson scored three in the second, the first two coming around on Ryleigh Fontana's rope triple to left center and then Fontana finishing her way on a double by Throumoulos. Kelsea Flanagan ripped a double in the third to make it 10-0. Morrisville picked one up in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout from J'Anne Colbow, but Janzen Long was able to wiggle out of trouble with a strikeout and a groundout.

Four Clarkson hitter had multiple hits in game two, including Rydelek, Fontana, Throumoulos, and Martin, an impressive feat since most were limited to two plate appearances. Amanda Corrice gained the win, tossing three scoreless innings and giving up just one hit, while Long and Avery McDonald each threw one inning for Clarkson.
