Knights Defense Again Limits Opposition in 14-6 Win Over Brockport

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight game, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team's defense frustrated its opponent into numerous turnovers and very few shots as the Golden Knights posted a 14-6 non-league win over Brockport on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

With their third straight victory, the Golden Knights improved to 3-1 on the season while Brockport slipped to 1-3. Clarkson faces another SUNY school next week when the team travels to take on Plattsburgh State.

The Golden Knights' defense was strong from the start, limiting Brockport's shot attempts and also minimizing any second chances with clean saves and quick pick up of groundballs. Clarkson allowed only four shots total shots in the first half and had 20 of its own, allowing the Knights to build an 8-1 lead by the break. Clarkson scored three in the first quarter and then scored two more in the second before Brockport was finally able to get on the board with a free position shot near the midway point of period. Clarkson made sure to take the momentum into the break, scoring three times in the final five minutes, including a nice transition goal in which the Knights caused a turnover and created a break up field for a goal by Makenna Cassin with 2:13 to go in the half.

Three more goals in the third period got the clock running continuously as the Knights continued to apply pressure defensively, forcing five turnovers in the period. However, Brockport found its footing in the fourth, scoring four goals in a stretch of less than 90 seconds thanks to quick wins off the draws and rapid offensive sets. A timeout by the Knights halted the momentum and returned the advantage to the Knights, as the home team would not allow another goal until the final minute of the contest.

Gabby Cranfield and Sydney Nakas led the way offensively for Clarkson each scoring six points, with Cranfield recording two goals and four assists and Nakas going even with three goals and three helpers. Karli Scherpf added three points on two goals and an assist. Makenna Cassin also produced two goals and three caused turnovers and Mea Tranquilli also forced three turnovers.

For Brockport Hailey Lewkovich led the offense with three goals and Tristan Davis added a goal and two assists. Karaline McCarthy won six draws and also had an assist for the Golden Eagles.

Clarkson finished the game with a 22-12 edge in shots on goal and a 34-19 lead in total shot attempts. Riley Donovan made seven saves for the Knights, while Arianna Reed made five stops for Brockport and Marion Wheeler came on in relief to make four saves.
