Garvey Forces Five Key Turnovers in Knights 12-10 Win Over Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Although the team found itself down by three goals in the early going and by that same margin at the end of the first quarter, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team used a steady offense and an active defense through the final three quarters to claim a 12-10 win over Ithaca College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference games while the Bombers went to 5-3 and 0-1. Clarkson has its final non-league game of the season on Tuesday when the Knights host crosstown foe SUNY Potsdam.

Alex Alfieri scored the opening goal of the game for the Knights, but the Bombers responded with four in a stretch of less than six minutes, immediately forcing the Knights to regroup defensively. The teams traded scores for the remainder of the quarter, but when the second period started, Clarkson was a different team defensively, allowing only two shots on goal and five total in the second 15-minute stretch. Clarkson slowly got back into the game, tying it at 7:04 when Ian Erskine scored just in front of the crease off a funky hop and then taking the lead on James O'Rourke's goal with a little over two minutes to go in the half.

Ithaca came out of the intermission with a goal off the opening faceoff to tie the game and then took a 9-8 lead thanks to back-to-back goals from Tim Rogers (9:59, 9:11). The Knights tied the contest with 27 seconds to go on another Alfieri goal. In the fourth, Clarkson took the lead on a goal by Connor Holly and slowly built its margin to three with only five minutes to go. The Knights forced turnovers at key times to keep Ithaca's offense from building momentum, none bigger than when Joe Porto caused one with about four minutes remaining in the contest, allowing the Knights to kill of precious seconds of the clock. Ithaca was busy trying to mount a comeback in the final minutes, but the Bombers could only put one more goal up, as the visitors were limited to just a single goal in the final 24 minutes of the contest.

James O'Rourke led the Knights with five points on three goals and two assists and Alfieri added four goals. Jack Garvey caused five turnovers and grabbed five groundballs and Griffin Emerson had 12 saves, two caused turnovers, and three groundballs.

For Ithaca, Tim Rogers produced four goals and an assist and Brendan Occhino reversed those numbers with a goal and four assists. Liam Alberti picked up 12 groundballs, mostly on his 17-for-26 results from faceoffs, and Andrew Minard posted 14 saves.
