Dominant Day on Faceoffs Leads Clarkson to 12-6 Win Over Brockport

Brockport, NY – Goals came in bunches in the first period for each team, but the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team defense once again had a day in a 12-6 victory over Brockport Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-0 on the year while Brockport remained winless at 0-6. Clarkson will be challenged next week when it travels to Connecticut to take on Trinity.

Although there were six goals in the first period, those tallies came in stretches of less than 30 seconds, 25 seconds, and then barely a dozen seconds. Clarkson got on the board first with a goal from James O'Rourke at 8:45 and then Ian Erskine tallied only 27 seconds later. Daniel Wright gave Brockport its first goal at 6:21, only to have the margin returned to two when Robert Fox scored at 5:57. Then the Golden Eagles picked up goals from Marc Zappulla and Austin Thornhill at 4:56 and 4:45, respectively, making it 3-3.

Clarkson would end the goal flurry in the second, keeping the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard but finding the back of the net three times to double up the home team at the break. Brockport stayed close in the third, rallying to within two near the conclusion of the period, but two goals in the final 40 seconds gave the Knights the necessary momentum for the fourth quarter, as O'Rourke and Connor Holly scored in the last minute to change the trajectory of the contest.

The Green and Gold dominated in most facets of the game, none more so than on faceoffs where Clarkson was 18-2 thanks to a 9-1 record from Gabe Vassallo and a 6-1 mark by Jamie Rhoades. The Knights also had a 52-23 lead in total shots, a 30-13 edge in shots on goal, and a 39-23 advantage in groundballs, significantly bolstered by the faceoff record.

Robert Fox recorded seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the Knights. Connor Holly chipped in five points on three goals and two assists and Ian Erskine had a goal and two helpers. O'Rourke scored twice and William Goyette had two assists. Tristen Dillon also had five groundballs and caused four turnovers. Griffin Emerson had seven stops in the Clarkson crease.

For Brockport, Daniel Wright scored three times and Austin Thornhill added a goal, two caused turnovers, and two groundballs. Jared Kulik was busy between the pipes for Brockport, producing 18 saves.
