Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Griffin Nets 25 in Knights Regular Season Finale Against RPI

Potsdam, NY – Junior Fallon Griffin knocked down 11 shots for 25 points, clinching the scoring title in the Liberty League along the way, but her effort was not enough in the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team's 70-58 loss against Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights closed out the campaign with a record of 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the Liberty League, while RPI improved to 17-8 and 12-6.

After a quiet opening minute or so, the two teams both got rolling on offense, frequently trading 3-pointers and layups. Maddy Polky had a layup-and-one to give Clarkson a 10-6 lead at the 6:13 mark, but two straight 3-pointers from the Engineers put the visitors back on top. For the remainder of the first quarter, the two squads swapped leads, as Clarkson utilized a lot of backdoor cuts and quick dribble drives to get layups. The Engineers got the line a little more frequently than Clarkson did, and also took advantage of Clarkson turnovers to produce 13 first-half points off the Knights' miscues.  RPI appeared ready to head into the locker room with some momentum after taking a seven-point lead (39-32) with a little over three minutes to go, only to see the Knights respond with consecutive 3-pointers from the wings by Fallon Griffin and Addie Kea, pulling the Green and Gold back to within one at the break.

Each team shot better than 50% from the floor overall in the first half thanks to strong runs from the perimeter. RPI was 6-for-12 from beyond the arc and Clarkson went 7-for-11 from deep. Fallon Griffin was particularly tough to stop for the Knights, scoring 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting with three 3-pointers on as many attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

RPI came out with an 8-0 run at the start of the third with the streak finally ending on a layup from Griffin at 7:31. Two more layups near the midway point of the quarter by Griffin pulled the Knights back to within three, but the margin wavered between four and six points for the remainder of the period as both teams cooled considerably from their torrid start, the gap eventually ending up six (56-50) after a pair of free throws from Siena Smith in the last minute.

Near the midway point of the fourth quarter, RPI extended the margin to double figures, including an 13-point advantage (65-52) following a jumper from Tyler Hormazabal with 3:43 left. Addie Kea converted a layup at the other end to break the streak by the Engineers. Unfortunately for Clarkson, that make did not spark a comeback as the Knights settled for a 12-point defeat.

Griffin came within one point of her season-high with 25 points, shooting 11-for-16 from the floor, while also adding in 11 rebounds and three steals. Polky ended up with 12 points for the Knights, going 5-for-10 from the field. Addie Kea also added eight points and five assists.

For RPI, Siena Smith was 9-for-12 from the floor for 23 points and also chipped in four steals. Megan Heyns closed with 14 points.
