Geneva, N.Y. - Down just two at the half, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team would be unable to answer a 57% second-half field goal percentage, leading to a 62-79 loss at Hobart College, Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson moves to 11-12 overall, 6-10 in the league following the setback which complicates the playoff picture for the team with just one weekend of regular season matchups remaining. Hobart improves to 12-11 overall and 6-10 in the Liberty League.
Hobart would come out of the gates firing, climbing out to an 11-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Braeden Burns would break the egg in the scoring column for the Knights with two free throws but two more mid-range buckets from the Statesmen meant the lead would grow to 15-2 before the 15 minute mark.
As Clarkson began to find some footing on the offensive end behind two buckets from Nate Abernethy and a Grayson Wallace three, Hobart would continue to do just enough to keep the lead in double-figures. Down 23-12, the Golden Knights would then rattle off an 11-0 run up to the 7:19 mark that brought the deficit back to just three. Bobby Piddock, Steve DeRegis, Burns and Wallace all combined to go 4-5 from the field over the three minute stretch.
An emphatic and-one from Burns brought it back to a one-point game but the free throw chance to tie it up would come up just short as the game closed in on the six minute mark. The hosts were then able to get back up by four on two occasions but responses from Abernethy both times brought Clarkson right back to within striking distance. Alex Moesch provided the Statesmen with a five-point lead off a quick hand-off layup from the top of the key with just seven seconds remaining before a last second long-range three from DeRegis sent Clarkson into the half down 34-32.
Despite not registering a field goal until the 15 minute mark, Clarkson would close out the half with a 40% field goal percentage but shoot just 25% from beyond the arc. The Statesmen led by as much as 14 at one point but both teams were evenly matched in most statistical categories through the first 20 minutes.
Clarkson would tie the score up straight out of halftime until a sharp 8-0 scoring run from the Statesmen saw the hosts' lead grow back to eight less than three minutes in. Abernethy and Burns would combine for a 6-0 response to get it back to 44-42 as both teams would continue to trade baskets up to the 10 minute mark.
With the Golden Knights continuing to keep it a one possession game, the hosts would manage to fashion a 6-0 run in less than a minute pushing the advantage to 60-51 with eight minutes remaining in the contest. Abernethy would then break a near-three minute scoring drought for the Knights but Monty Nedd and Justin Price would combine for the next five points for Hobart, making it 65-53.
With the lead growing to near 20 in the final five minutes of the contest, the Knights managed to get back within 12 on one trip but a 12-7 advantage for the Statesmen broke an eight-game losing streak with the 72-62 final.
Clarkson would finish shooting just 37% from the field and 16% from three compared to marks of 51% and 32% for the Statesmen. The hosts would hold a stark advantage in rebounding (44-24) and bench points (22-11) despite Clarkson forcing 13 turnovers.
Abernethy would dump in 24 points and grab five rebounds while Burns added 22 points, seven boards and five steals in the effort. No other Clarkson player would score above six points over the 40 minutes. Alex Moesch led four players in double-figures for the Statesmen with 16 points. Nedd finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
