Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Knights Fall to SLU, 2-0

Potsdam, NY – Goals early on in each half kept the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team playing catch up on Wednesday evening as the Golden Knights suffered a 2-0 Liberty League defeat against St. Lawrence at Hantz Field.

Clarkson saw its record fall to 7-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Liberty League while the Saints edged forward to 5-3-4 and 2-1-1. The Golden Knights host Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

For the opening 10 minutes, play was in the St. Lawrence offensive half, as Emma Fleming was called upon to make one save and another shot went right. Between those two tries, the Saints were able to score on a quick transition as Sofia Manne sent a long pass from line to line, missing her teammate and a Clarkson defender and into open space for Sydney Keenan. She was then able to take a few touches and launch a high shot into the upper corner at 4:48 to make it 1-0.

A few minutes after the goal was scored, the play firmly tilted in the Clarkson offensive end, with St. Lawrence not recording a shot for the rest of the half. Ella Intrieri nearly tied the score in the 13th minute but her ball flicked off the crossbar. Only 30 seconds later, Intrieri was denied by SLU keeper Reagan Murphy. The rest of Clarkson's shots were wide of frame, but the Knights felt good about how the final 30 minutes played out heading into the intermission.

SLU put a halt to the Clarkson momentum early on in the second half, once again converting in the first few minutes. Lily Murphy played the ball forward just outside of the box where the ball ticked off a couple of Clarkson defenders before landing on the foot of Barrett Freeman. She didn't take long possessing the ball, getting one quick touch and knocking the ball in at 50:56.

In a repeat of the first half, Clarkson again carried play in the final stretch of time, but was limited in quality looks. Two came in rapid succession when Avi Johnson's attempt was stopped by Murphy, but she allowed a rebound just above the six-yard line to Gabrielle Cyganik, who ripped a shot but directly at Murphy for another save. That ball was hit hard enough that a third chance did not materialize, as the ball went out of the penalty area and ended the scoring threat.

Clarkson finished with an 11-7 advantage in total shots and a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also topped the Saints in corners at 7-5. Fleming made two saves in the game, while Murphy had five stops.
