Knights Split For Third Straight Day of Competition in Last Eight Days

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Olivia Baxter averaged nearly seven digs per set over the course of two matches for the Clarkson University Volleyball team as the Golden Knights split on Saturday against Keuka and Middlebury at Alumni Gymnasium.

For the second straight day, Clarkson opened its day with a three-set sweep, winning 25-20, 25-11, 25-23 over Keuka, but ended up on the short side of a sweep against Middlebury, falling 25-15, 25-23, 25-20. Clarkson will head to New England next weekend.

Long rallies occurred in the first set, though many of the early points came in the way of errors as 12 of the first 18 points were unforced miscues. The teams eventually brushed off the lethargy and got their offenses going as Clarkson finished with 14 kills. Ainslie Reimer hit .500 (5-1-8), including the final two kills of the set. The two teams produced 58 total digs, including 31 for the Knights and 17 specifically from Olivia Baxter.

In the second set, the Knights led from the get-go, with Conley Burns the standout (4-0-10) and Grace Hanson chipping in three more kills. Clarkson led by just four (11-7) before going on a spurt midway through the set, rattling off eight of the next 10, capped by a kill from Ashley Currier, to give the Knights a double-digit advantage, and they cruised from there.

The third set was also controlled by the Knights, but Keuka would never allow Clarkson to truly pull away. The Wolves were within two four times after the midway point of the set, and made a late push to challenge the Knights, coming back from a 24-18 deficit with five straight. However, a late dodge by the back row preserved the win, as the final serve sailed just out of bounds.

Olivia Baxter finished with 27 digs in the match, followed by 13 digs from Haley Currier. Conley Burns posted 16 kills and 10 digs, and Ashley Currier had 29 assists. Adding to the offense, Grace Hanson notched nine kills and Ainslie Reimer produced eight kills.

For Keuka, Nina Scott had 11 kills and 12 digs and Summer Elza recorded 14 assists. Alessandra Castaneda (16 digs) and Gabby Rodriguez (15 digs) led the Wolves' defense.

In the opening set of the second match, the two teams battled at the start, but the Panthers' offense began to assert itself in the middle of the game, going from a 9-9 tie to a 17-11 lead, ending the run on kills from Molly MacDonald and Carolyne Byrne. Middlebury extended its lead down the stretch, taking advantage of Clarkson mistakes.

Set number two saw the Knights erase an early deficit and claim a seven-point lead late in the game after a Marin Hangliter ace made it 17-10. Clarkson had that advantage 10 points later as well following an ace from Jordyn Leader, but Middlebury methodically came back due to the play of Gabby Pribisich, who made plays on offense and at the net. She recorded the kill that finished off a 9-0 run by the Panthers and then Caroline Byrne ended the set two points later.

The third set was tied on 11 different occasions, all the way up to 19-19, but the Panthers found another ear when necessary, utilizing a strong block up front from three different players to shut down Clarkson's comeback attempt.

Baxter recorded 14 digs in the second match, while Ashley Currier posted a double-double on 21 assists and 11 digs. Grace Hanson picked up nine kills for the second straight match, this time leading Clarkson in that category.

For Middlebury, Molly Harrison hit .385 with 11 kills against just one error in 26 attacks and Caroline Byrne also had 11 kills and three aces. Campbell Bartley ran the offense to the tune of 38 assists.
