Medina and Rolland Connect Twice to Lift Knights Past Union 2-1

Schenectady, NY – A hard shot from the top of the 18 by Paul Rolland in the 81st minute turned out to be the difference, as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Union College Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in Liberty League contests, while Union fell to 2-4-2 and 0-1-1. Clarkson faces its Route 11 rival on Wednesday when the team hosts St. Lawrence University.

The opening 45 minutes were relatively quiet as each team had just two shots in the first half. Both of Clarkson's attempts were on the frame and the first by the Knights did challenge the Union defense. Noah Partenza tried for the far post with a hard shot on the ground, but Jacob Perry made a diving stop at 16:20 to keep the game scoreless.

The two teams traded goals about two minutes apart in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Partenza was able to keep the ball inbounds in the Clarkson defensive zone and sent a pass back to the middle for Kyle Otis. The senior then sent a ball into the midfield and the Knights were off to the races. Paul Rolland made an excellent pass on a through ball in traffic to Daniel Medina, and the senior won the race and was able to send a grounder past Perry at 53:16.

Still jubilant from the goal, the Knights found themselves tied once again when Union responded with a goal barely two minutes later. Justin Ely carried the ball in deep and kept it in play near the goal line before sending a pass back out to Luke Ingber near the top of the penalty area. Ingber, just a step inside of the 18 on the right side, was able to settle the ball and sent a shot to the far post, tying the game at 1-1 at the 55:29 mark.

Union was busy with its offense over the next few minutes, but none of the opportunities proved to be particularly challenging to Clarkson goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup. During this time, the Garnet Chargers began to create a gap in shots, but that extended run of chances at the Golden Knights goal came up empty.

With around 10 minutes left in the game, Clarkson was able to work a little give-and-go in traffic between Rolland and Medina. Rolland began with the ball about 35 yards out and it trickled over to Medina near the top of the 18. Although three Union defenders were near Medina, he was able to sneak a short pass back through to Rolland. The sophomore had enough space to launch a hard shot into the top corner at 80:20, giving Clarkson the lead.

Union had a chance late in the game with a corner kick opportunity. Several scrums in front caused a number of Golden Knights to end up on the ground, including Kladstrup, but none of the Garnet Chargers' attempts could get past the Clarkson defense. After about 20 seconds of chaos following the corner kick chance, the ball was cleared and the Knights held on for the win.

Union won the battle of shots (15-6), but the shots on goal was considerably closer (6-5). Union also had one more corner kick chance (5-4) than the Knights. Kladstrup finished with five saves and Perry had three stops.
