Partenza Scores, Knights Held to Tie versus Cardinals

Plattsburgh, N.Y. - Noah Partenza scored his second goal of the season but a late goal from the hosts leveled the score up, as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team tied Plattsburgh State 1-1, Wednesday evening.

Clarkson moves to 4-0-2 overall, still without a defeat in the 2025 season. The team travels to Rochester on Saturday to take on the University of Rochester at 5 p.m.

The hosts started on the front foot, creating several shooting and corner kick opportunities, straight from kickoff. Despite the pressure, Clarkson still managed to find the opening breakthrough keeping in line with a string of early, first-half goals over the past few games. In the 20th minute, a centered ball from the right wing was met by Lars Stephensson whose shot was parried away by Matthew D'Ippolito straight into the danger zone in the center of the penalty box. Partenza was able to pounce on the loose ball and lift a looping shot, over the covering backline of Cardinal defenders, into the roof of the net via a deflection for 1-0.

Partenza got loose from the defense again in the 21st minute keen on doubling his tally for the day but a tame effort from the freshman was collected by D'Ippolito to keep the advantage at just one. The Cardinals seemed to turn the pressure up as the first half dwindled down, forcing the Clarkson defense into action to keep the lead intact.

Plattsburgh continued to build pressure as the second half proceeded, keeping the Clarkson attack at bay for a large amount of the half. Even with the sustained pressure, the Cardinals still struggled to garner any clear-cut chances on goal as the backline of the Golden Knights seemed determined to keep the scoreline intact. Carter Kladstrup, while not necessarily tested by shots on goal, was still a big part of the action, claiming several set-pieces and crosses to take control of any danger.

With just under 30 seconds remaining in the match, Plattsburgh were awarded a free-kick from about 35 yards out with the clock continuing to tick down. The Cardinals played the set piece short to Santiago Vargas, who clipped a cross from the middle of the field over the 18 yard line into the path of D'Ippolito who seemed to get the last touch on the ball for the tying goal, which was ultimately credited to Vargas as the game ended in a deadlock.

Plattsburgh State held an advantage in shots (11-3) while both teams found the target on three shots apiece. The Cardinals also held a 5-1 advantage in corners but were forced offside five times by the Golden Knight backline. Kladstrup made two saves in goal for Clarkson while D'Ippolito also made two in net for the Cardinals.
