Knights Split Doubleheader Crossover Series with Union, Need Game Three on Sunday

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Beau Vardion delivered a walk-off home run in the first game for the Clarkson University Baseball team, but Union came back from a three-run deficit in the middle innings of game two to survive with a split, the Golden Knights winning the opener 4-2 in 10 innings and Union taking the second contest 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 17-13 on the season and Union saw its record go to 22-17. The two teams will play the deciding game of the three-game series on Sunday to see which will advance to the Liberty League Championship Tournament next week.

In the opener, Cole Riskin dodged trouble in the first few innings, stranding runners in scoring position in the second, third, fifth, and sixth, with none bigger than the last of that grouping. With runners on the corners and a 2-0 count, Riskin got the groundball he needed as Beau Vardion snagged the ball behind the bag and flipped to Cam Jerrett for a 6-4-3 double play. The Knights had led by two since the third when the team strung together three consecutive hits from the bottom third of the order. James Mason led off with a single through the left side and was followed by a triple from Vardion. A single through the right side then allowed Vardion to score to make it 2-0.

That was the only hiccup for much of the game for Union starter Chris Suter, as he tossed up zeros in every other inning save for the third. Union's offense came alive in the eighth, taking advantage of some Clarkson miscues. The leadoff hitter reached on an error and after another error that kept the at bat alive, Noah DiCaprio doubled in the Garnet Chargers' first run. Thanks to a sacrifice fly from Dylan Swarts, the game-tying run then crossed as well.

Union challenged in the ninth as well with two straight hits and a walk to load the bases, but Nathan Hartley got the fly out he needed to end the inning. Cam Jerrett nearly ended the game in the bottom of the ninth, but DiCaprio made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Jerrett of at least extra bases. It didn't matter in the end, though, as Clarkson closed out the contest in the bottom of the 10th. CJ Cartier singled up the middle to open the frame and then advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt from James Mason. Needing only a single to likely end the game, Vardion instead delivered a walk-off two-run homer to left, his second and third RBI of the contest.

Joe Figliolino, Vardion, and CJ Kanick each had two hits in game one and Nathan Hartley picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.2 innings and striking out three. Chris Suter took the hard luck loss for Union, striking out five against no walks in 9.1 innings of work.

In game two, the offenses broke out with Union scoring multiple runs in four frames, most late in the contest. The Garnet Chargers jumped out on top with two runs in the second as Sam Strazza plated a pair with a two-run double, but Clarkson responded with five in the bottom of the third. James Mason led off by getting hit by a pitch and Beau Vardion then doubled to put runners on second and third. James Chagnon's grounder to the right side was enough to plate Mason and Albert singled to score Vardion, tying the game. Aidan Kuefner followed with a two-run homer to left and one more run scored when David Harris singled in Cam Jerrett.

Union clawed back to tie the game in the fifth. Kyle Zaslaw dropped a two-run shot over the left field fence to get the Chargers within one and Dylan Swarts singled to left center to score Caleb Miller, tying the contest at 5-5. An inning later, Strazza picked up his third RBI of the game with a single and Miller scored another with a sacrifice fly. Union continued to take advantage by cashing in its leadoff men reaching base, as Cooper Ames delivered an RBI ground out in the seventh, and Swarts singled home another in the eighth, with one more following when the Knights tried to eliminate a runner on the base paths.

Kuefner and Harris each had a pair of hits in game two for the Knights, including Kuefner's second home run of the season. On Union's side, Sam Strazza was 4-for-5 with three runs second and three more driven in and Kyle Zaslaw hit his sixth homer of the campaign.
