Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Knights Sweep SLU Series Slate, Plate Eight in Eighth to Escape Saints, 13-11

Canton, NY – Both teams were busy on offense in the first handful of innings, but it was in the eighth that each erupted, and the Clarkson University Baseball team's outburst was more significant in that frame, as the Golden Knights won a slugfest against St. Lawrence University 13-11 on Sunday at Tom Fay Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-11 overall and 8-6 in West Division games, while St. Lawrence fell to 11-22 and 5-9. Clarkson should be locked into the second seed in the West Division, meaning it will host Union College next weekend in the Liberty League Crossover series. St. Lawrence can still make it into a meaningful crossover series as well should the Golden Knights defeat Hobart on Monday and the Saints win against University of Rochester on Tuesday.

Of the 18 half innings played on Sunday, more than half had at least one run scored. Clarkson did its part in the top of the first when Cam Jerrett singled home Seth Albert, but St. Lawrence took the lead in the bottom of the second on a John Donnellan solo home run. St. Lawrence picked up another run in the third with an RBI single by John Gannon.

Clarkson briefly went back on top thanks to a two-run single by Beau Vardion in the fourth, only to see the Saints respond with two in the bottom half of the frame on another home run by Timothy Connor. The lead then expanded to 6-3 for St. Lawrence in the fifth with run-scoring hits from Eion Morrissey and Mike Siano. The Knights would get two runs back in the sixth, cutting the margin down to once again, with an RBI double from David Harris and another run-scoring single off the bat of Vardion.

The Knights broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the eighth inning. CJ Cartier tied the game with a double to center and the Knights took the lead on Vardion's single which scored Cartier. Pinch-hitter James Mason then doubled in another run and Seth Albert singled home the fourth run of the frame. Aidan Kuefner immediately following with an RBI single and Jerrett drove in his second run of the game on a ground out, to put the tally at 11-6. Joe Figliolino homered for the second straight game and for the fifth time this year, making the score 13-6.

St. Lawrence wasn't about to go away quietly, however. Jack Finnegan hit a three-run homer and Mike Siano plated another run for the Saints with a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead down to three. In the bottom of the ninth, the Saints twice brought the tying run to the plate as Matt Davis delivered a sac fly, but Nathan Hartley struck out the final hitter of the game to end it.

Clarkson pitchers stranded 15 runners against the Saints, although St. Lawrence delivered 20 hits and also walked five times. The Golden Knights' offense was more efficient with its 14 hits, as Vardion finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and Figliolino reached three times thanks to his home run and two walks. Albert, Kuefner, Harris, and Cartier each had two hits and Harris scored three times.
