Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Score for Vassar Sends Knights to Loss on Senior Day, 11-10

Potsdam, NY – A goal from Baker Morton with less than 90 seconds left in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team finished off its season with a one-goal defeat against Vassar College, 11-10 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights finished the season at 8-8 overall and 1-6 in conference contests, while Vassar edged up to 6-9 and 1-6 in league meetings.

Clarkson trailed midway through the first quarter when Vassar put up its first score, but the two teams essentially traded goals for the remainder of the half, allowing the Brewers to claim a one-goal lead at the halftime break. The Brewers scored twice early in the third to take a three-score lead for the first time in the contest, but the Golden Knights rallied with five goals in the final eight minutes of the third period.

Sam Mancabelli started Clarkson's third-quarter rally with a goal that barely touched his stick off a pass from Robert Fox. Connor Matthews scored about three minutes later, and Matt Szwagulinski took an outlet from goalkeeper Griffin Emerson and raced down the field for a goal at 4:19 to tie the game. The Knights then took the lead for the first time when Robert Fox connected with Vincent Lavarnway on the doorstep of the crease at 1:07 and one more goal was scored by Ethan Hopkins in the final ticks of the quarter to put the Green and Gold 9-7.

Vassar won the even-numbered quarters in the back-and-forth affair, holding Clarkson to just three total shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, a similar number that the team had in the second period (Clarkson had 17 shots on goal in the first and third quarters combined). The Brewers took advantage, coming back to tie the game on a man-up goal near the 12-minute mark of the fourth, but Clarkson jumped back ahead at 9:36 when Andrew Kearney beat the Vassar defense. However, a behind-the-back goal by Drew Mazzocco at 3:46 tied the contest one more time, setting up Baker Morton's heroics for Vassar a few moments later.

Clarkson finished the game with slight edges in shots (39-34), shots on goal (22-20), and groundballs (40-38). Ethan Hopkins (2-1-3), Robert Fox (1-2-3), and Sam Mancabelli (2-1-3) each posted three points for Clarkson. Jack Garvey had a team-best six caused turnovers and Matt Szwagulinski grabbed 10 groundballs for the Knights.

For Vassar, Shan O'Hara scored four goals and Drew Mazzocco had a pair of goals and two assists. Holden Anderson won 13 of 22 faceoffs and had nine groundballs. Drew Quinn made 12 saves for the Brewers.
