Matthews Scores Five in Clarkson's 11-7 Win Over Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY - Forcing 21 turnovers overall, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team gave up just one goal over the final 25 minutes, claiming a key conference victory with an 11-7 win over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights edged forward to 8-3 on the year and 1-1 in the Liberty League while Skidmore fell to 4-4 and 1-1 in league contests. Clarkson takes on fifth-ranked Rensselaer next Saturday in Troy, NY.

Though Skidmore scored in the opening minute of the first period, it was a relatively quiet opening 15 minutes in terms of offense. Sam Mancabelli scored with 1:49 to go in the quarter, which helped start a strong run for the Knights on both ends of the field. At the start of the second, Vincent Lavarnway scored at 13:08 to give Clarkson its first lead of the game and Knights continued their tear with three more goals, making for a string of five straight in a 13-minute stretch. Skidmore finally ended its drought with a pair of goals separated by only 16 seconds, but Connor Matthews scored in the final minute of the first half to push the margin back to three (7-4).

Skidmore clawed back to within one (7-6) by the 10-minute mark of the third quarter, but again the Knights' defense stood tall for an extended run. Clarkson took advantage with three straight goals from the end of the third to the start of the fourth, and the Knights held the home team off the scoreboard for more than 13 minutes. That score came for Skidmore while the team was on the man-up at 11:51. Following the Thoroughbreds last goal, Clarkson would not allow a single shot on goal for the rest of the game as all shots were wide, and the Knights also forced five turnovers in that stretch.

Connor Matthews scored five goals, caused two turnovers, and picked up two groundballs for the Knights. Sam Mancabelli scored four points with a goal and three assists and Alex Seiler picked up three points with six groundballs. Robert Fox also recorded three assists.

Griffin Emerson made 12 stops in the Clarkson crease and Collin Kuester posted 14 saves for Skidmore. Clarkson ended the game with a 25-19 lead in shots on goal (40-36 overall).
