Auburndale, F.L.- Cam Jerrett finished the day with four hits while four other players each had two apiece as the Clarkson University Baseball team opened their Florida trip with an 8-5 win over Ohio Wesleyan University in the morning while being outlasted in the afternoon matchup with UMass-Dartmouth, 9-2.
Clarkson moves to 4-1 overall with Ohio Wesleyan dropping to 4-6 and UMass-Dartmouth improving to 4-5. The knights will take on SUNY Brockport, Saturday, in a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Game 1: Ohio Wesleyan got on the board first, early in the bottom of the second inning following a single to left field by Noah Brazytis. The lead wouldn't last long however as a two-run blast from Jerrett to left field in the top half of the third gave Clarkson their first lead of the contest, 2-1. The Battling Bishops had an instant response with a two-run blast of their own off the bat of Carter Vilevac pushing their lead back to a one-run advantage at 3-2.
Clarkson evened the game up at 3 in the top of the fourth, as CJ Cartier sent a ground ball towards the second baseman that was deep enough to score Christopher Griggs from third. The Knights managed to nab the lead and tack on some insurance runs in the second-half of the game with two runs in the sixth thanks to a sac-fly off the bat of Seth Albert and a single from Aidan Kuefner. Another run in the seventh thanks to another sacrifice fly, this time from a pinch hitting David Harris, brought the lead to 6-3 in favor of the Knights. A two-run inning top of the ninth pushed the lead to 8-3 with Jackson Waters singling to deep shortstop and Griggs sending a sac fly to center field to complete the scoring. The Battling Bishops managed to push two runs across in the bottom of the ninth and were knocking on the door with bases loaded and one out before Ryan Petrie managed to work his way out of the jam forcing a ground-ball, 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Mateo Sarabia picked up the win striking out three over five innings with Petrie gaining the save through four innings of work with three strikeouts.
Jerrett led Clarkson at the plate with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Albert, Griggs and Cartier all had two hits as five other players would connect for one hit each.
Game 2: Clarkson would take on UMass-Dartmouth in the afternoon matchup. The Corsairs would get on the board first in the top of the second courtesy of a triple off the bat of Joe Muzio that brought across two runs. After a quiet next couple of innings, Clarkson tied things up in the bottom of the fifth with Joe Figliolino grounding out to the shortstop which scored Aidan McGuire third. Albert scored the tying run during the next at-bat as a wild pitch worked its way to the backstop knotting the game up at 2-2. UMass-Dartmouth would go on to score the next seven runs of the game with one run in the top of the sixth and six in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach with the 9-2 final.
Cartier was the only Knight that had multiple hits in the second game with two. Albert, Jerrett and McGuire accounted for the remainder of hits for the Green and Gold.
