Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Knights Fall by Two in Season-Opener Versus Muhlenberg

Victor, NY – A three-goal spurt in the middle of the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as Muhlenberg downed the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team 12-10 in the Golden Knights 2025 season-opener, played at the Pinnacle Athletic Center.

The Golden Knights' offense got off to a slow start, giving up a man-up goal less than 90 seconds into the game. Muhlenberg continued to control the game offensively in the early going, thanks to Jack Bill, who assisted on the Mules first two goals and then scoring the third near the tail end of the opening period. The Mules picked up one more goal off a give-and-go behind the net when Liam Ledwith scored at 10:59 in the second to make it 4-0.

Instead of wallowing in the slow start, the Knights picked up a goal less than a minute later when freshman Ian Erskine ripped one home from the center of the field off a pass from Robert Fox. That began a bit of a run for the Knights, especially late in the quarter. James O'Rourke found Erskine for a second goal with only 50 seconds left in the half, and then Connor Matthews ran in on the right side and rifled a shot high and into the back of the net with just 20 seconds left, tying the contest at 4-4.

The halftime break didn't slow down the Knights as Alex Seiler won the initial faceoff, picked up the groundball and raced down the field to find Andrew Kearney on his left, giving the Knights their first lead of the game just nine seconds into the third quarter. That would be the last in a stretch of five straight scores for the Knights, as the two teams traded goals with three straight scores going unassisted. Once Muhlenberg tied the score at 6-6, the Mules picked up two more. Off a quick restart from behind the net, Chase Kusko scored, and only 20 seconds later Jack Bill deked hard to his left and came back to whip a shot righty, putting Muhlenberg up by two. Not to be outdone, Ian Erskine also put together an impressive individual effort for the Knights, scooping up a groundball near the center of the field and outrunning the rest of the defense to for a score with 4:39 to go.

It looked like the Mules might jump up by three late in the third, but a goal was called off due to a slashing call on the offense. With the goal nullified and Clarkson operating on the man-up, Sam Mancabelli scored off a lefty shot off a pass from Andrew Kearney with 48 seconds left in the period.

The Knights tied the game early in the fourth quarter when Seiler connected from the top of the box and was blasted with a high hit to give Clarkson another try on the man-up. The opportunity came up short, and Muhlenberg responded with a goal two minutes later and then a man-up score with 9:27 to go. One more goal five minutes after the extra-man score had the Mules up by three. Clarkson had its chances late, including a near goal from Alex Alfieri at the 2:30 mark, but Jace Riley Day was there to make the save. The Knights picked up one more goal late from the stick of James O'Rourke, but Clarkson wouldn't possess the ball again for the rest of the contest.

Ian Erskine and Andrew Kearney tied for the Clarkson team-lead in scoring, with Erskine scoring three times and Kearney tallying one goal and two assists. Alex Seiler, James O'Rourke, Connor Matthews, and Sam Mancabelli each had a goal and an assist. Seiler and Logan Wilkinson led the way for the Knights with four groundballs each.

Muhlenberg had a 44-41 edge in shots and a 28-21 lead in shots on goal. Griffin Emerson made 16 stops for the Knights and Jace Riley Day had 11 saves for the Mules.

Muhlenberg was led by Jack Bill, who had five points on three goals and two assists to go along with four groundballs. Chase Kusko also chipped in four points with two goals and two assists.
