Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Points from DeRegis Lift Clarkson Past Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Sophomores Steve DeRegis and Braeden Burns combined for 47 points to help lead the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 74-68 Liberty League victory over Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights ended the season at 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the Liberty League while Skidmore closed out its campaign with a record of 6-19 and 2-16.

Clarkson opened with the first basket of the game, but the two teams would trade mini-runs over the next few moments, with Skidmore going 7-0, Clarkson going on an 8-0 run, and the Thoroughbreds scoring six straight. Later in the first, the Thoroughbreds had a four-point advantage before Jack Dalgety hit a 3-pointer at the 5:17 mark. That began another run, as the Knights concluded the first half on a 10-1 run.

The break changed nothing in regards to the small streaks by each team since Skidmore opened the half with a seven-point rush to take the lead, and the Thoroughbreds led by five following an Aidan Roy 3-pointer at the 16:12 mark. As had been the trend in the game to this point, Clarkson went on a roll of its own and picked up the lead, capped by a 3-pointer from Matthew Parent at 10:06, putting the Knights up by five.

Skidmore challenged Clarkson several times, getting back to within one on four occasions, including a Fumani Sithole 3-pointer with 5:08 to go, and the Thoroughbreds regained the lead briefly on a pair of free throws from Jack LaGarde at 4:43. That was the last time that Skidmore would be in the lead, though, as Braeden Burns made a key layup after two free throws from Jack Dalgety to put the Knights up three. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes including a turn-around jumper from Nick Padilla at 1:22, pulling Skidmore back within two. On the next possession, Steve DeRegis was doubled on the right side of the court on the perimeter, but eventually shook one defender and got into the lane with a layup that dropped in with 52.6 seconds left. That make proved the difference maker in the second half, as Clarkson hit enough free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

DeRegis finished with 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting and 6-for-9 from the arc to go along with nine rebounds. Braeden Burns closed with 23 points, going 7-for-15 from the floor, with 10 boards. For Skidmore, Alexei Downie had a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds, Nick Padilla scored 14, and Aidan Roy tossed in 12.
