Paul Smiths N.Y.- Matthew Clarner and Skylar Francis received top honors Saturday, as the Clarkson Nordic Skiing team braved the cold and took part in the Paul Smith's Invitational.
Schools competed in the Mixed 2x5km relay where teams of two (one male and one female) skied in a relay race, with each skier doing one 5km lap before passing off to the other.
Clarner (13:33.6) and Francis (16:53.2) paced a field of 41 teams in the event, combining for a time of 30:26.8. Two teams from Paul Smith's College closed out the top three overall, at 30:36.7 and 30:37.8. The next top finisher for the Golden Knights was the team of Finn Payne and Emma Haims of Smith College in 22nd at 36:13.4. Payne posted an individual time of 14:44.0 to lead the duo.
Further down the leaderboard in 27th, Torsten Brickley teamed up with Isabelle Sloan, also of Smith, for a 37:54.3 time with Brickley coming in at an impressive 14:39.8, individually. Continuing the Clarkson/Smith partnership were Oliver Dolcino and Avery Sullivan in 32nd at 40:11.5 and Silas Bartol and Iris Ventimiglia in 33rd at 40:30.8. Andrew Kanclerz and Clare Janas rounded out the field for Clarkson in 37th overall, with the pair posting a 48:00.0 time.
Adam Jansen and Patrick Murray took part in the men's 2x5km relay, taking second, out of two teams. The duo finished at 33:43.5 behind Isaac Kristich and Tenzin Mathes of Paul Smith's College.
The Golden Knights will be back in action Sunday for day two of the invitational at the Visitor Interpretive Center in Paul Smiths, competing in the Classic 15km Individual Skate.
