Soderwall Posts First Shutout of Season, Knights Down Riverhawks 2-0

Lake Placid, NY – Junior Shane Soderwall made 21 saves for his shutout in Division I hockey as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team broke out of its recent slump with a 2-0 win over UMass-Lowell Friday night at the Adirondack Invitational, played at the 1980 Rink at Herb Brooks Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-10-0 on the season while Lowell moved to 5-8-0. Clarkson faces Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 7:30 pm, while the Riverhawks open the second day of the tournament when they face St. Lawrence, slated for a 4:00 pm start.

Soderwall, a junior transfer from Division III Curry College, notched 11 shutouts in two seasons for the Colonels, including eight a year ago. His previous low in goals allowed with the Knights was one, limiting North Dakota to a single goal in late October and just one goal for Union College in early November.

Scoring chances were limited during the opening period, though the best ones came for both teams during Clarkson's first power play. The Knights challenged the UMass-Lowell defense early with a few solid chances in the during its extra skater chance, though the Riverhawks came right back down the ice for a shorthanded bid that was denied by Soderwall. Overall, the first 20 minutes highlighted special teams for both squads thanks to three penalties, as nine of the two teams' combined 19 shots on goal came during power play.

Clarkson opened the second period with an extended power play due to a five-minute major that overlapped the final minute of the first, but the Knights couldn't get much going despite the lengthy opportunity. Although the final 35 seconds of the first period saw Clarkson skate strong while up a player, the first handful of minutes were controlled by UMass-Lowell with an extensive forecheck that kept the Knights from maintaining possession in their offensive zone for much time. Clarkson finally got its first shot in the second period about four minutes in, and the team did have a couple of attempts that turned out to be near misses as the penalty ended, with Matthew Mayich's attempt in the slot barely turned aside.

The Knights picked up a score about two minutes after the power play concluded following an extended run in the offensive zone. The teams exchanged possession without the puck leaving the zone as a solid forecheck from Jace Letourneau put the Knights in position beneath the goal line. Letourneau flicked the puck out to the left circle to Ryan Bottrill, and he maneuvered into the slot for a quick wrist shot that beat Riverhawks goaltender Austin Elliott at 6:15.

Shortly after the goal, Soderwall made a few solid saves on both sides of the 10-minute mark of the period. He swallowed up a shot in the slot from Dominic Payne with just over nine minutes off the clock, and later made a diving stop to keep the puck from sneaking over the line at the far post before gloving another shot to create a stoppage for the media timeout.

After the brief break, UMass-Lowell found itself on the power play, only to have an infraction even the teams at 4-on-4 hockey. That proved valuable for Clarkson, as the Knights were able to capitalize with a second goal in the period. A turnover by the Riverhawks before clearing the zone gave Ryan Bottrill another chance as he kept the puck from leaving the zone at the high slot. He sent a quick pass towards the goal, finding Justin Cote alone on the doorstep, and the freshman finished the play at 13:37 for a 2-0 Clarkson advantage.

Although UMass-Lowell did a good job on the forecheck and put pressure on Clarkson while the Knights were on offense, the Riverhawks struggled to get much going for themselves for most of the period, producing only three shots on goal in the first 17-plus minutes of the period before pulling their goaltender in the final moments. The Riverhawks had a few shots near the cage, but the Knights either blocked the attempts or Soderwall was able to make the stops when necessary.

Clarkson finished with a 31-21 edge in shots on goal giving Soderwall 21 saves in the contest. Austin Elliott finished with 29 stops for the Riverhawks. Clarkson was 0-for-4 on the power play and Lowell was 0-for-3.
