Two Goals in Final 90 Seconds Send Knights to First Road Defeat of 2024-25

Potsdam, NY – Suffering its first road loss of the 2024-25 season, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team came up short of a road weekend sweep, dropping a 4-2 decision to Brown University Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 13-7-2 overall and 7-3-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while Brown got a much needed win to move to 4-7-1 in conference games and 6-9-2 overall. Clarkson will face its Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University next weekend, traveling to Canton on Friday and facing the Saints on Saturday at Cheel Arena.

Just like last night's Clarkson contest, a goal was scored in the first minute of the game, though this time it was the home team that would take the early lead. Brown won a faceoff 30 seconds into the game and the Bears flipped the puck up and over the neutral zone, allowing a 2-on-2 to develop, with Tony Andreozzi taking advantage of a missed clearance, skating in at the bottom of the slot with a wrister at 0:43 in the first. Besides that score, the teams were even in shots at 12-12.

Penalties were aplenty in the second period, as the two teams combined for five infractions in the period, resulting in three power play goals. Clarkson tied the game early in the second on the power play when Ryan Taylor took a shot that was blocked and caused a stick to break, with the rebound finding Ellis Rickwood on the opposite side of the crease to flip the puck past Lawton Zacher.

Brown responded with a power player marker of its own five minutes later, creating an impressive chance with some adept passing. Ryan St. Louis was skating up to center ice, but dropped a pass back to Brian Nicholas, but Nicholas saw an opening and went blue line to blue line, locating Max Scott with a skate on the line and ready to burst. Scott went in for a 1-on-1 with Ethan Langenegger and went to the blocker side with a wrist shot at 8:12.

Clarkson killed off two more penalties after the power play goal by the Bears, allowing the Knights to take advantage of their second power play chance of the period. Ellis Rickwood found Trey Taylor near the point, as Taylor took some space towards the slot and feigned a shot attempt, drawing two defenders to him. That allowed Ayrton Martino to have plenty of space in the right circle, and Taylor found him for a one-timer at 17:52, tying the game 2-2.

The start of the third saw turnovers and some somewhat sloppy play, as neither team mustered much in the way of offense for the first eight minutes. Eventually both teams would clean up their play and each had scoring chances in the last stretch of the third period, but only Brown would cash in on those opportunities. Tony Andreozzi chased the puck down at the goal line and Brendan Clark sent a pass from behind the net to Max Scott for a one-timer from the near slot to put the Bears up 3-2 at 18:35. Without a timeout and having trouble clearing the zone to pull the goalie, Clarkson couldn't put together much offense before Langenegger was finally able to vacate his spot between the pipes. Shortly after, Max Scott finished off his hat trick with an empty netter from his own defensive blue line at 19:33.

Brown ended the game with a 41-27 advantage in shots. Clarkson was 2-for-3 on the power play and held Brown to one goal in three extra skater chances. Langenegger ended up with 37 stops for the Knights and Zacher had 25 saves for Brown.
