Schenectady, N.Y.- A strong second half by the Garnet Chargers would determine the outcome as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team dropped a Liberty League contest to Union, 83-63, Saturday evening.
The Golden Knights move to 8-7 overall, 4-4 in conference while Union improves to 8-7 overall, 4-4 in the league. Clarkson is back in action next Friday and Saturday when they travel to RIT and Hobart for a pair of league matchups.
Union would jump out to a quick 6-0 lead before Braeden Burns was able to get the Knights on the board with a three-pointer. Both sides continued to trade baskets going back and forth until Clarkson managed to gain a bit of a foothold, going up by four on five separate occasions closing out the first half of play. Baskets by Burns, Casey Montesano and Jack Dalgety allowed the Knights to stay just out of reach of the hosts before a mid-range jumper from Steve DeRegis gave the Green and Gold a 29-25 lead headed into the break.
The second half would be all Union on the other hand as Clarkson would be successful in keeping the lead intact at the start, even pushing it to five at the 18:18 mark following a Dalgety three. From that point on the Garnet Chargers would take control of the contest as Clarkson managed to tie the game at 40-40, after a Burns free throw. The hosts would then rattle off a 7-0 run followed closely by a 9-0 run to build a 14 point lead with 10 minutes remaining. From that point on, Clarkson was unable to string much momentum together as Union managed to work the ball around on offense creating high-percentage scoring opportunities, and limit the pressure on the defensive end, keeping the Knights from facilitating out of the paint.
For Clarkson, Burns led the way with 15 points, to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Montesano and Dalgety both chipped in 13, a career high for Montesano, while Finn Cork grabbed 12 rebounds in the effort.
