Potsdam N.Y.- Two first half goals stood as the deciding factor as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 2-0 victory over RIT.
The Golden Knights improve to 5-0-3 overall, 1-0-0 in the league.
A little over a minute was all it took for Clarkson to open the scoring in the contest catching a sluggish RIT defense on the back foot. Jay Jezioro continued his fine run of form, controlling a forward ball and working past the right side of the Tiger backline. Working his way into the 18, a ball struck across the 6 yard line fell to the feet of fellow forward Daniel Medina, at the back post all alone, as his shot nestled in the back of an almost empty net. The goal was Medina's third of the season.
Clarkson continued to apply pressure as the visitors struggled to piece together any momentum in the opening part of the game.
Following a few close misses from long-range, the Green and Gold managed to double their lead in the 20th minute. With a slight overload on the left wing, Logan Drake was set free on a nicely played pass from Medina, sending a low cross towards the penalty spot where Brody Frankowski connected on a one-timer shot, rifling the ball past the outstretched arms of the RIT goalkeeper, into the bottom left corner.
The visitors managed to work themselves back into the contest a bit, constructing a few chances before the half-time whistle but never creating anything too menacing.
As the second half opened, the game settled into more of a possession focus as RIT worked their way onto a stronger foothold frustrating the Clarkson attack as they looked for more goals. Carter Kladstrup was called into action early on, making two nice stops in goal in five minutes to keep the lead intact.
One of the best chances of the second half for the Knights came in the 69th minute as Medina fed Zach Shufelt behind the backline of RIT, setting up a 1v1 opportunity with the goalie, who managed to close the gap quickly and make a diving stop, as the Knights searched for a third. Clarkson nearly found that third goal in the 80th minute as Medina again received a pass just inside the 18, quickly worked the ball to his left foot and fired a shot on goal past the defender which was again met by Jason Trapp in net.
Kladstrup was credited with three saves in net, showcasing his athleticism throughout the game making several leaping grabs on corners and crosses through crowds in front of him. Trapp managed four stops in his effort in the loss.
Clarkson led in shots on goal (6-3), as both teams managed 10 shots over the 90 minutes while RIT led in corners, 6-1.
