Knights Split in Tri-Match at Geneseo

Geneseo, NY – On the road after an evening match at home on Friday, the Clarkson University Volleyball team split against University of Scranton and SUNY Geneseo, falling in three to the Royals but rebounding against Geneseo with a sweep.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-8 on the year. Against Scranton, the team posted solid offensive numbers early, but fell 25-22, 25-21, 25-17. Clarkson's offense wasn't as impressive against Geneseo, but the match resulted in a sweep for the Golden Knights 25-20, 25-19, 25-15.

In the opener, Clarkson led early with the first three points, but Scranton rallied with six of the next seven, including back-to-back aces from Camryn Hoffman which made it 6-4. Scranton would never trail again, slowly expanding its lead in the set to as many as five on two occasions, including set point. Clarkson rallied with three straight to put the game in doubt, but a kill by Kassidy Means ended the first set.

Scranton was never behind in the second set, opening with the first three points and moving out to a 9-3 advantage early. The Royals led by as many as eight (17-9) before the Knights began to make a run, getting back to within one twice at 20-19 and 21-20. That effort would be in vain, however, as Scranton recovered to score four of the final five points for the win.

Set three again saw Scranton lead early, though Clarkson tied things up at 5-5. That was the last time the two teams would be even, however, with the Royals scoring eight straight to make it 15-6. That turned out to be too much of a whole from which to climb out for the Knights, as they fell by eight.

Versus Scranton, Marin Hangliter led the way with eight kills while both Emily Alexander and Grace Hanson were one short of that figure, recording seven kills apiece. Anna Mayer posted 23 assists and Abigail Spector notched 11 digs.

Clarkson was right back on the court for a match against the host Geneseo. The Golden Knights would never trail in the first set, though Geneseo tied things up on several occasions. Clarkson finally made its move near the midway point, rattling off six straight to make it 19-13, including a pair of kills from Grace Hanson. That run was enough to keep Geneseo at a safe distance for the rest of the game.

The second set was a repeat of the first, with Geneseo hanging around throughout the set to make things interesting, though Clarkson was never behind. Clarkson turned it on down the stretch, changing a one-point lead into a six-point win, as the Green and Gold scored the last five points, all on decisive kills from Ashley Currier, Marin Hangliter, and Allyson Treichel.

At the start of the third, Geneseo enjoyed its first lead of the match at 4-3, only to see Clarkson go on small runs to take a three-point lead near the midway point (13-10) and then a five-point advantage a few moments later (17-12). Although a kill from Kathryn Barba reduced the margin back to four, the Golden Knights scored eight of the final 10 points, winding up with a 10-point margin in the final set.

Against Geneseo, Ashley Currier filled up the stat sheet, hitting 8-1-22 (.318) with 16 assists, three aces, and 11 digs for a near triple-double, while Anna Mayer also had a double-double on 14 assists and 10 digs. Abigail Spector led the team with 15 digs, while Grace Hanson, Allyson Treichel, and Marin Hangliter each had eight kills.
