Knights Busy On Offense, but Fall to Montclair in Four Sets

Lancaster, PA – In a back and forth match that saw ample offense on both sides, the Clarkson University Volleyball team dropped a four-set decision against Montclair State on Friday, 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 29-27.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 2-5 overall while Montclair moved to 6-1. Clarkson takes on Franklin & Marshall and Virginia Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon.

The opening set saw the two teams each strike for 17 kills, though it was Montclair that jumped out in front at the start with seven of the first eight points. Clarkson battled back to get within three at 9-6 thanks to an Emily Alexander kill, and pulled to within one following a Marin Hangliter kill. Down the stretch, however, Montclair picked up enough cushion and settled for a four-point win, hitting .366 in the set.

In the second, Montclair again started with an early lead, only to see Clarkson tie the set six times before finally taking the lead at 11-10 thanks to a kill from Allyson Treichel. The set tied two more times, but the Red Hawks pushed the advantage to five by scoring five of six points, capped by two kills from Sarah Capone. Clarkson pulled to within one (24-23), but Kasey Trzaska ended the run with a kill for the Red Hawks.

In set three, the Red Hawks again started off with the early lead, but Clarkson rallied quickly and never lost the advantage after that. Down 4-1 early, Clarkson scored five straight points, including a pair of aces from Olivia Baxter. Still holding a two-point lead a few points later, Clarkson rattled off five straight points, with two coming off service aces from Anna Mayer, to make it 13-6. Though the Red Hawks stopped the run, Clarkson would push the advantage to seven on five more occasions before finally concluding the game with an eight-point gap. Clarkson had five aces in the set and had 11 kills against just two errors in 26 attempts in the third game.

The fourth set saw the most offense of all, and was tied on 16 different occasions as extra points were needed before a winner emerged. The Red Hawks led by three (15-12) following a Bryn Bautista kill, though that margin was down to one just a few moments later (18-17). It appeared as if Clarkson would take the set when the team rattled off six straight points, three coming early to force a Montclair timeout, and then three more out of the break to make it 23-18. However, Montclair responded with six points of its own, tying the set on a Rachel Curran kill and taking the lead on a Capone kill (24-23). Clarkson had its chances with two set points, but Montclair would not go away, and eventually won the set with back-to-back kills from Zoey Horn and Bautista.

Marin Hangliter finished with a double-double on 16 kills and 12 digs for Clarkson, while both Emily Alexander and Allyson Treichel recorded nine kills each. Treichel hit .500 in the match and Alexander hit .421. Tess Sorel had eight kills and three blocks. Anna Mayer recorded 25 assists, 11 digs, 6 kills, and 2 aces, and Abigail Spector finished with 15 digs and four assists.

For Montclair State, Sarah Capone hit .385 with 22 kills and Rachel Curran struck for a .372 percentage and 18 kills. Emily Carcich posted 53 assists and Katie Rodman notched 21 digs and nine assists.
