Clarkson takes on UC Santa Cruz and Whitworth University on Saturday tomorrow afternoon. In the opening match of the day, the Golden Knights found themselves in early holes in the first two sets and despite rallies late, could not overcome the early deficits. In the first set, the Knights were within one on several occasions, and trailed by that margin after a service error made it 9-8 in favor of the Lutes. However, Pacific Lutheran rattled off five straight kills to nearly double up Clarkson at 15-8. The Lutes kept the Knights at roughly that distance for much of the first set, though Clarkson made a late run thanks to kills from Marin Hangliter and Allyson Treichel put the score at 22-19. The Lutes would score the final three points of the set. The second was similar to the first, with the Knights down by six when Pacific Lutheran reached the midway point (13-7). Clarkson got back to within four twice, including on a kill from Treichel that made it 22-18, but again the Lutes notched the final three points. Clarkson won the third set, pulling away late. The Knights trailed early, but tied the set 8-8 on a kill from Treichel and then took the lead on an ace from Anna Mayer. Four straight points, including two kills from Grace Hanson, gave the Knights a 14-10 edge, and Clarkson would never relinquish the lead. The Lutes got within two (16-14), but the Knights scored three straight, forcing a timeout. The break didn't slow Clarkson down, as a kill from Hangliter and an ace from Abigail Spector, put the margin at seven, with that lead expanding to eight by set's end. Another hard-fought set appeared to be the way in the fourth, as the two teams traded points to a 5-5 tie early on. However, the Lutes took charge with six straight points to make it 11-5, and eventually expanded that margin to double figures at 17-7. From that point it was just a matter of time, and the Knights succumbed by a margin of 13. Allyson Treichel posted 13 kills and a .407 hitting percentage and Tess Sorel nearly matched that figures at .389 with eight kills. Ashley Currier recorded 19 digs and 19 assists, Anna Mayer picked up 17 assists and three aces, and Abigail Spector led the way defensively with 20 digs. Despite not starting until after midnight on the East coast, the Golden Knights showed no signs of jet lag in their first set against the host Whitman. Clarkson scored six of the first seven points to start the match, though most came on miscues by the Blues. Whitman got back within three a few times, only to see Clarkson get hot offensively near the midway point of the set. Treichel and Hangliter each had kills to double up Whitman (14-7) and the run continued for four more points (18-7) on an ace from Spector. Clarkson cruised from that point and won going away, 25-12. The second set was a similar start as the Knights had five of the first six points, though this time the points were scored via Clarkson's offense. The lead expanded to eight (10-2) on a kill from Treichel. Though Whitman whittled the margin down to three near the midway point of the game (13-10), Clarkson would not allow the set to get any closer, scoring four straight, three off swings from Hangliter. Another strong run had the Knights doubling up the Blues once again (24-12) and Treichel ended the set with an emphatic kill in the middle a few points later. In the third, Clarkson again won four of the first five, as well as six of the first eight points, but this time Whitman stuck around and made things interesting. The Blues got back within one a few points later and trailed by just two near the middle of the game, 12-10. Clarkson was able to pull away thanks to some errors by the home team as an attack error, reception error, and setting error allowed the Knights to take a five-point advantage, 16-11, forcing Whitman to take a timeout. The quick break worked, with the Blues scoring four straight to put the Knights on their heels and calling for a timeout. Out of that second stoppage, the teams traded points for a while, jostling back and forth from one-point to two-point advantages for the Knights. Down by three, Whitman rattled off four points to take its first late-lead in the contest, but it was a short-lived advantage as the Knights battled back to tie. Following an attack error by the Blues, Clarkson had its first match point, and Ashley Currier delivered with a strike that went through the arms of the Whitman libero in the back row. Hangliter picked up 10 kills with 11 digs for a double-double and Treichel again hit for a strong percentage, picking up eight kills at a .438 clip. Currier and Mayer each had 11 assists, with Mayer also chipping in 10 digs and three aces. Spector picked up 17 more digs in the back row.
