Clarkson Splits Again, Fitzpatrick Tosses Shutout Versus Buffalo State

Clermont, FL – Finding itself on the opposite ends of shutouts, the Clarkson University Softball team split its third consecutive doubleheader, dropping the opener to Grinnell College 15-0 and beating Buffalo State 2-0 on Thursday in Florida.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-8 on the year following their final doubleheader in the Sunshine State. Clarkson is off until the first week of April, when the team faces SUNY Potsdam.

The opener saw Clarkson fall behind by 10 before the team had its first at bat. Grinnell had a number of hits in the top of the first, but it was Taylor Durak and Samantha Chu with the big blows, as each hit three-run homers. Durak then had a two-run single in the second to put the Pioneers up 14-0. Clarkson slowed things down by the third, allowing just one run over the final three innings, but the early deficit was far too much to overcome.

Molly Pezzano was 2-for-2 in the first game, while both Zoey Kovach and Katy Aldous each had one hit.

In game two, Devin Fitzpatrick tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out six against three walks. Fitzpatrick would get all the offense she would need in the top of the third. Emma Sabourin reached to open the inning and advanced to second after a ground out. Pezzano then singled up the middle to score the first run of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, Kenzie Scott and Sarah Congelosi were on second and third, but Fitzpatrick wiggled out of the jam with two consecutive strikeouts and a pop up to end the threat.

Clarkson recorded an insurance run in the fifth. Pezzano reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on an Elizabeth Greco single. That set the stage for Bridget Kerwin, who singled up the middle to plate Pezzano.
