Knights Drop Opener of Florida Trip to North Park, 12-3

Auburndale, FL – Grad student added two more extra-base hits to his early season tally, but the effort was not enough as the Clarkson University Baseball team lost its opener in Florida, 12-3, to North Park University on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 2-2 while North Park stayed above .500 at 8-6. Clarkson faces UMass-Dartmouth in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

North Park got things going in the first by starting the game with the bases loaded and none out. Nicholas Hofacker almost got out of the jam unscathed when he struck out the four and five hitters, but Reece Arakaki singled up the middle to plate a pair to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Clarkson got a run back in the bottom of the second as Pat Elliott led off with a double to left-center and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Robert Whalen.

In the third, a deep fly ball got lost in the sun and allowed a run to score to make it 3-1. Later in the frame, Gio Lucchetto singled in a run and then a fielder's choice by Ethan Raspolich sent another run home for a 5-1 margin. In the bottom of the fourth, Jake Millich doubled and came around on a fielder's choice to put the tally at 5-2, but that was as close as the Golden Knights would get.

In the fifth, again it appeared as if Clarkson might get out of a no-out, bases loaded jam. Tommy DiFranco struck out one hitter and with a drawn-in infield, the Knights cut down a runner at the plate. However, with two outs Rylan Li doubled in a pair and Alex DiVito followed with a two-run single of his own to make it 9-2. Clarkson picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth on a triple to left-center by Elliott. The Vikings picked up the final three runs of the game in the eighth, again with two outs, when DiVito doubled in a pair and a wild pitch scored Raspolich.

Joe Pagano finished the game going 3-for-4 while Elliott was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to pace the Knights' offense. North Park had 13 hits in the contest, with Alex DiVito going 4-for-6 with three RBI. The Vikings also took advantage of nine walks.

Each of Clarkson's four pitchers struck out three hitters in the game for a total of 12. Hofacker struck out three in three innings, Tommy DiFranco fanned three in two innings of work, Jason McGee had three whiff in the sixth and seventh innings, and Nathan Hartley also struck out three in the eighth and ninth innings.
