Gosselin Nets Overtime Winner to Lift Knights Past Cornell, 4-3

Potsdam, NY – Grad student and captain Mathieu Gosselin scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation and then scored the game-winner in overtime as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team topped 11th-ranked Cornell University 4-3 in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-14-1 overall and will face Colgate University on Saturday evening. Cornell dropped to 16-5-5, losing for the first time in 2024 as the Big Red's unbeaten streak was halted at 14 games.

After tying the game with an extra attacker in the final minute of regulation, it appeared as if Clarkson would settle things against Cornell via shootout until Ryan Richardson and Mathieu Gosselin put some pressure on the Big Red defense in the final minute. Three Cornell defenders worked the puck around trying to clear the zone, but Richardson was pesky against two Big Red defensemen and Gosselin stole the puck from another. Gosselin quickly centered the puck to Richardson, and the junior kicked the puck back to Gosselin who sent the puck past Cornell goaltender Ian Shane with 58 seconds remaining in overtime.  It was Gosselin's second game-winning goal of the year and his first goal in overtime as a member of the Golden Knights.

There were plenty of chances for both teams in the first period thanks to some power plays but both teams came up empty in the opening 20 minutes. Clarkson got the benefit of an early five-minute major, but it took the Golden Knights nearly four minutes before they registered a shot. Once the Knights got going, they had eight chances, but only two made it through to challenge Cornell goaltender Ian Shane. Near the midway point of the period, Clarkson had another chance on the power play and Ryan Richardson almost cashed in with a shot in the slot, but Shane tossed his glove out and snagged the puck to keep the game scoreless.

Cornell also had a chance on the power play when the Knights were whistled for a trip with just over two minutes to go. The Big Red took five shots in that stretch, but just one made it through the Clarkson defense to Austin Roden.

For all the defense displayed in the first period, both teams' offense shined in the second. Cornell came out strong and had Clarkson on its heels, but the Knights fought through the early rush and capitalized eight minutes in. Erik Bargholtz eluded a Big Red defender behind the net and passed the puck out to the right point to Jack Judson. His wrist shot went wide and bounded off the back wall, finding the stick of Ryan Taylor on the dot of the right circle. His quick slap shot beat Shane at 8:01 to put the Knights up 1-0.

Cornell trailed for less than two minutes, knotting the score back up at 1-1 at 9:47. Ben Robertson put a shot on net from the left wing side near the blue line with Roden denying the attempt, but a rebound was left on the doorstep for Kyle Penney, who converted the goal.

Seven minutes later, Clarkson went up again thanks to a two-on-two rush. Tristan Sarsland took a quick shot from the right side and was denied by Ian Shane, but Ayrton Martino crashed the net and quickly chipped in the rebound to again give Clarkson the lead. A late penalty kept the Knights from heading into the second intermission with the momentum, as Cornell scored on the power play when Gabriel Seger and Ryan Walsh combined to put together two quick passes, finding Dalton Bancroft in front with a one-timer.

Another early penalty at the start of the third saw Cornell gain its first lead of the game. Some solid passing again set up the Big Red, as Bancroft received the puck near the top of the right circle, skated in and stopped with a toe drag for space and finished with a wrist shot at 2:25.

Clarkson had a good chance with about seven minutes to go on a rush as Talon Sigurdson had a hard wrist shot from the top of the slot, but Shane whipped his glove up high to snag the puck at 13:04. Just after the save from Shane, Cornell was called for a penalty giving the Knights their third power play chance of the game. However, Clarkson was limited in its chance while up a skater, as the Big Red actually had two solid chances while shorthanded as they took advantage of the puck leaking out of the zone. The Knights were back on the power play shortly after their third chance concluded, but again Cornell's defense withstood Clarkson's hard attempts from the outside. In an attempt to maintain pressure with an extra attacker, the Knights pulled their goalie, and the strategy worked when Clarkson scored with 26.5 seconds to go.

The Knights won the faceoff with 33.5 seconds to go and Anthony Romano skated down to the end line, flipping the puck through traffic and using Mathieu Gosselin as a blunt instrument, shooting the puck off his teammate's side to tie the game. Gosselin was rewarded with the goal while Romano and Martino earned assists.

Clarkson finished with a 25-22 lead in shots. The Knights were 0-for-4 on the power play while Cornell was 2-for-3 in its extra skater chances. Roden made 19 saves in the win for Clarkson, while Shane stopped 21 shots for Cornell.
