Golden Knights Lead Wire to Wire in 70-55 Victory Over Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Senior Jack Dalgety's tip-in midway through the second half sparked a 16-3 run that all but put the game away for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, as the Golden Knights downed Skidmore College 70-55 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds saw their three-game win streak snapped, dropping to 3-3 and 0-1. Clarkson will take on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights rolled out to an early lead as Lorenzo Rappa buried an early 3-pointer and Steve DeRegis had a layup around two free throws from Braeden Burns, putting Skidmore in an early seven-point hole with less than three minutes off the clock. Although the lid came off at the other end for the Thoroughbreds, it was but a reprieve as the Knights led 17-2 following a layup-and-one from Braeden Burns with 13:11 left on the clock. A minute later the Thoroughbreds picked up five straight with a layup from Aidan Roy and then three free throws due to a technical and foul on the play. Once again, however, it would be several minutes before Skidmore would score, allowing the Knights to build the margin all the way up to 18 (27-9) with a shade under seven minutes to go. The two teams traded points the rest of the way and the Knights led by 19 at the break.

Skidmore struggled in the first half, shooting only 25.8% (8-for-31) and going scoreless from beyond the 3-point arc. The Knights were a touch better, but the key was Clarkson shooting 14-for-14 from the free throw line.

Out of the break, Skidmore began getting back into the contest by making a few long-range shots, eventually pulling to within 10 points following a 3-pointer from Aidan Roy at 13:33. Finn Cork hit a free throw 90 seconds later, but the key for the Knights came a moment later when Cork hit a layup, but Jack Dalgety was there for a tip-in. That sparked a run for the Knights where the Green and Gold went on a 16-3 run, capped by another Dalgety layup to essentially put the game away as the gap stretched to 23. From there the Knights cruised to their 15-point victory.

Steve DeRegis led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 7-for-13 with three 3-pointers, for Clarkson. Braeden Burns added 16 points and Jack Dalgety chipped in 11 with four assists. Finn Cork was big on the glass with 12 rebounds while also finding teammates for five assists.

For Skidmore, Aidan Roy scored 14, Charlie Fantom added 10 points and six rebounds, and Nick Padilla tossed in nine points.
