Burns Busy in Knights 77-63 Win over Alfred State

Alfred, NY – On a day where long-range shots were missing the mark, sophomore Braeden Burns posted a double-double in the first half alone to help lift the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 77-63 win over Alfred State to finish off the first semester's games.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-4 overall to close out the 2024 portion of the season while Alfred State fell to 2-9. Clarkson will be back at home in early January when the team hosts St. Lawrence University in a conference doubleheader.

The Pioneers opened the scoring and led for a brief moment before Jack Dalgety hit a 3-pointer to put Clarkson on top, the one and only make from beyond the arc in the first half. The lack of success from deep mattered little, however, as Braeden Burns was a one-man wrecking crew, dominating on the glass and in the paint to the tune of 20 points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone. Burns made a layup at 16:06 to put the score at 11-6 and the Knights expanded the margin to seven on three occasions before finally pushing it to double digits near the midway point on free throws from Sean Enelamah. Another layup from Burns at 7:50 put the gap at 13, but the Pioneers got back to within six with roughly two minutes to go when Jacob Gonzalez scored a layup, snagged a steal, and then converted another layup. A flip off the glass in the lane in the waning seconds of the half by Burns put the lead back at 10 points at the break.

Although the second half began with a 3-pointer by the Pioneers, it was Clarkson that came out hot, going on a 10-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers from Lorenzo Rappa and Jack Dalgety to expand the Golden Knights' advantage to 17 points at the 17:35 mark. The run was halted briefly, but Clarkson immediately began another, going off on a 12-2 run in a stretch of less than five minutes to put the margin at 24. The Knights pulled all of their starters with eight minutes remaining and cruised to the victory as Alfred State would never truly challenge the outcome of the contest.

Burns finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds in 30 minutes, shooting 12-for-21 from the floor. In his first action of the 2024-25 season, Matteo Sinon scored nine points in 10 minutes. Jack Dalgety also added 10 points while Finn Cork tossed in eight points, six rebounds, and seven assists in only 19 minutes.

For Alfred State, Darius Cunningham led the team with 14 points, going 5-for-13 from the floor. Michael Miller also scored 10 points for the Pioneers.
