Overtime Rebound Score Leaves Knights On Short End of 3-2 Defeat Against Providence

Lake Placid, NY – Graham Gamache knocked in a rebound in overtime with just under two minutes off the clock as 10th-ranked Providence College downed the 20th-rated Clarkson University Men's Hockey team 3-2 Friday night in game two of the Adirondack Winter Invitational at Herb Brooks Arena.

The Golden Knights, now 9-5-1 on the season, will face another top 20 team on Saturday when the team faces 16th-ranked UMass-Lowell. Providence improved to 9-3-2 on the year and plays St. Lawrence in the first game on Saturday afternoon.

The game-winner came during the 3-on-3 overtime session shortly after both teams decided it was time to make a change in lines. Providence held the puck in its own defensive end while getting two new players on the ice and the Knights used the delay to put three new skaters out. With fresh players skating hard and trying to make moves, Providence cycled around with Austen May spending time at the left circle and delivering the puck to Trevor Connelly who skated across the slot for a shot. His first attempt was denied by Clarkson goaltender Ethan Langenegger, but the rebound found Gamache, who steadied himself at the bottom of the left circle and made sure his shot was true, finding the back of the net at 1:57 in overtime.

The Friars utilized some providential ricochets and bounces on each of their three goals. The first goal came off a fortuitous bounce, but began with a nice defensive play behind the net in the opening minutes of the first period. John Mustard provided some pressure while Clarkson was trying to clear the zone with a restart from behind the net. Mustard did just enough to poke the puck away and found Tanner Adams, who dropped the puck back for Logan Will in the slot. Will's shot went wide of Ethan Langenegger's right pad, but bounced hard off the back boards and found Adams on the doorstep on the opposite side, where he chipped the puck in at 4:15.

Another big bounce went the way of the Friars while Clarkson was on the power play. Trey Taylor had a shot from the top of the left circle in the Providence defensive end, but his wrister had so much on it that when it banged off the glass, it slid past the Clarkson defense, springing Nick Poisson on the left side the other way. Poisson took advantage, making two quick moves and finding the back of the net at 13:33, short-handed for the Friars.

Providence almost had another breakout on a Clarkson power play, but instead Tristan Sarsland was able to keep the puck in the zone by sending the puck from the blue line along the right side boards to Ryan Bottrill. He then sent a centering pass to Jared Mangan in the slot and Mangan delivered with a hard wrist shot at 15:45 to put the tally at 2-1 in the first period.

After a relatively quiet opening to the second period, the Knights tied the game on an odd-man rush the other way. Tate Taylor gathered up the puck near the left circle in his own defensive end and saw an opportunity the other way. With strong strides to get out of the zone, Taylor sent a rink-wide pass to Bottrill on the opposite side, as the Knights had a 3-on-2 with a fourth skater joining and giving Bottrill another passing option. Bottrill chose his easiest option, dropping pass back to Ryan Richardson who whistled a shot past Philip Svedeback from the top of the left circle to tie the game at 2-2.

The third period was a quiet one with only 23 total shot attempts between the two teams and an even smaller total in terms of shots on goal (6-5 in favor of the Golden Knights). Following that relatively muted third frame, the game closed out in overtime as Providence put together four shots in less than two minutes of overtime, with the final one finding the back of the net.

The Friars finished with a 31-25 edge in shots. Each team scored on special teams, with Providence scoring short-handed and the Golden Knights doing so while on the power play. Langenegger ended up with 28 saves and Svedeback stopped 23 shots for the Friars.
