Rejuvenated Offense Lifts Clarkson Past Princeton, 6-3

Princeton, NJ – Rhea Hicks and Anne Cherkowski each notched four-point afternoons for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, helping the Golden Knights end a three-game losing skid with a 6-3 victory over Princeton in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference games and the Tigers fell to 2-4 overall. Clarkson is back at home next weekend, hosting Union College on Friday and Rensselaer on Saturday.

The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard first shortly after excelling on the penalty kill, allowing only three shots (one shot on goal) during a power play by the Tigers. Immediately after the penalty ended and the Knights were back skating even, Clarkson was in transition in a 3-on-2 and converted with a tic-tac-toe goal. Rhea Hicks skated down the left side, found Anne Cherkowski at the bottom of the right circle and a quick pass to the opposite post located Sena Catterall to make it 1-0.

After denying another power play opportunity for the Tigers late in the first period, Clarkson was up a skater to start the second thanks to a late whistle at the end of the first. The Knights took little time to make it 2-0. Keira Hurry started the play with a shot and a long rebound came out to Anne Cherkowski. She then passed the puck down to Catterall at the right post. Catterall's attempt was deflected through the crease to Hicks, but it ended up back on the stick of Catterall, who stuffed it in for a power play goal at 0:37.

Catterall nearly ended up with a hat trick three minutes later. The faceoff on the right side dropped back to Catterall at the top of the right circle, but her hard shot went wide of the post. It worked out for Cherkowski, however, as the bounce off the boards found her alone on the doorstep at 4:00 to make it 3-0.

Princeton got on the board for the first time midway through the second period, beginning a stretch for the next 20 minutes where the two teams would trade goals. Hannah Fetterolf scored on a deflection at 11:12 to make it 3-1, which is where the score stuck through the first two periods.

In the third period, Clarkson would pick up goals but the Tigers always reduced the deficit in short order. Cherkowski scored on the power play just 18 seconds into the stanza, sticking the puck over the blocker of the Princeton goalie, top shelf, to make it 4-1. Princeton scored only 23 seconds later when Issy Wunder knocked in a short pass from behind the net, going five-hole on Holly Gruber. It was a repeat eight minutes later, as Madison Chantler redirected Keira Hurry's shot from the point at 8:54, making it 5-2, but Princeton scored 46 seconds after the ensuing faceoff on a Sarah Paul wrist shot from the slot. The Tigers would pull their goalie with a little over four minutes to go, but couldn't get anything going at the other end. In fact, Madison Chantler recovered a loose puck near the top of the slot and wristed a shot into the vacated crease at 16:15 to finish off the scoring.

Catterall, Cherkowski, and Chantler each finished with two goals for the Knights. Cherkowski also had a pair of assists and Hicks matched her point total with four assists. Clarkson finished the game with a 41-22 edge in shots on goals, scoring twice on the power play and holding the Tigers scoreless in four tries with an extra skater. Holly Gruber posted 19 saves for the Knights and Jennifer Olnowich had 35 stops for Princeton.
