Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot Streaks from DeRegis and Parent Give Clarkson Win Over Canton

Canton, NY – Matthew Parent scored eight of his 10 points in a run late in the second half to help the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team pull away from SUNY Canton, as the Golden Knights earned a 53-44 victory on Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-2 on the season while the Kangaroos fell to 0-3. Clarkson heads back to Canton on Saturday when the team takes on St. Lawrence University.

Clarkson never trailed in Tuesday's contest and it appeared as if the team would run away with an easy victory judging from the early results. Braeden Burns opened the contest for Clarkson with a 3-pointer on the Knights first shot of the game and then Steve DeRegis dropped in three 3-pointers in a stretch of less than four minutes to put the Green and Gold up by 14 (16-2). However, Canton responded with a run of its own, scoring 12 straight to get within a single basket. The game would remain close until the final two minutes, when Jack Dalgety provided a bit of breathing room with a 3-pointer and another basket in the last moments of the half.

At the start of the second, Clarkson again expanded to a double-digit lead, but SUNY Canton finally was able to see a 3-pointer drop in at 13:37, as part of an 11-2 run to get the home team back within three. The lead was at just two with only 7:35 to go, but Parent hit a 3-pointer at 7:20 and then buried another with 6:50 remaining to put the gap back at eight. A few minutes passed before another jumper from Parent made the lead 10, and in such a low scoring contest, it might as well have been 30. Free throws down the stretch gave the Knights a nine-point win.

Jack Dalgety led the team with 18 points, DeRegis scored 11 points, and Parent had 10 points in just 14 minutes on the court. Eli Larson was 11-for-16 from the floor for Canton, scoring a game-high 23 points. The Roos finished the game shooting only 2-for-20 from beyond the 3-point arc.
