Knights Back on Track with Sweep of Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior setter Ashley Currier filled up the stat sheet for the Clarkson University Volleyball team, helping the Golden Knights get back on the winning track with a three-set sweep of Vassar College, 25-22, 25-21, 25-14, on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers fell to 2-10 and 0-1. Clarkson plays a pair of non-league matches tomorrow, starting with New Paltz at 11 am and then following with Baruch College at 1:30 pm.

In the first set, the Golden Knights jumped out to an early lead, leading by as many as three on three different occasions before either team reached 10 points. Vassar began to come back thanks to some Clarkson miscues and the two teams seesawed back and forth throughout the teens. Down by one, Vassar scored four straight to take a 20-17 lead, appearing ready to pull away to claim the opener. However, a service error ended the streak for the Brewers and started one for Clarkson, as block assists from Emily Alexander and Allyson Treichel pulled the Knights within one, and then each of those players scored kills to put Clarkson back on top. The Knights would never trail again, getting a key ace from Cecilia Velardi and a tipped kill from Treichel to end the set.

The second saw Clarkson lead for nearly the entirety of the set, earning an early lead and then rolling off seven straight points to get to the midway spot (13-6), thanks to back-to-back aces from Olivia Baxter and then block assists from Alexander and Treichel. Clarkson pushed its advantage to double digits after block assists from Tess Sorel and Ashley Currier made it 19-9. A series of close calls all went against the Knights in the next stretch, including one on the service line and two at the net, giving Vassar some life. The Brewers took advantage, getting all the way back to within three after a block by Julia Hale made it 24-21. Clarkson finally ended Vassar's six-point streak with a cross court kill from the right side by Emily Alexander.

The third set played out similarly to the second, but this time Clarkson would not let Vassar recover. With the game tied at 7-7, Clarkson scored seven straight, capped off by an ace from Olivia Baxter, allowing the Knights to double up the Brewers 14-7. Vassar would trim that deficit to as few as four a few points later, but the Knights called a timeout and scored seven straight out of that break, getting a pair of kills from Ashley Currier. That was enough as the Knights cruised to the win.

Currier hit .556 in the match (6-1-9) and also delivered 20 assists, 17 digs, and a pair of block assists. Grace Hanson led the Knights with eight kills while Emily Alexander had six kills and three block assists. Allyson Treichel posted five kills and had six total blocks, one solo and five assists.

For Vassar, Maura McAusland had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs and Holland Kaplan added six kills, but also made seven attack errors. Molly Ardren posted 13 assists and two aces.
