Clarkson's Comeback Thwarted by Vassar, Miles-Ferguson Nets 34 to Reach 1000 Career Points

Poughkeepsie, NY – Graduate student Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored a career-high 34 points, recording his 1000th career point in the process, but the effort wasn't enough for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, as the Golden Knights suffered a 76-72 defeat at Vassar on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League, while Vassar edged forward to 5-7 and 3-2. Clarkson plays its final non-league game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, beginning an eight-game home stand.

Clarkson scored on its first two trips down the floor and had 10 points in less than three minutes, making the game appear as if it would be a high-scoring affair. However, the Knights cooled off after their 10th point of the game, getting just one basket and a free throw over the next seven minutes. The two teams remained close with a Steve DeRegis 3-pointer putting the score at 22-20 in favor of Vassar at 5:52, but the Brewers got hot from the perimeter down the stretch. Over the course of roughly two minutes, Vassar saw Avery Lee, Alex Walters, Shea Fitzgerald, and Luke Adams each make 3-pointers to put the Knights down by 15. Clarkson was able to trim the deficit to 11 when Jack Dalgety nailed a 3-pointer from the wing with five seconds to go in the half.

The most turnover prone team in the league, Vassar was able to limit its mistakes in the first half, committing just three against Clarkson's eight.

The Knights started the second half with a 10-2 run to get back within three, emphasized by a Braeden Burns dunk at 15:48 to put the score at 42-39. Ninety seconds later, Ryan Miles-Ferguson netted a 3-pointer from the win to get Clarkson within two, but Vassar responded with a 12-2 run, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Alex Walters. Ryan Miles-Ferguson kept the Knights in the game for the rest of the contest, making shots and getting to the free throw line regularly, but the Knights never got closer than three for the remainder of the game.

Miles-Ferguson became the 24th player in program history to reach the 1000-point plateau, doing so on a 3-pointer from the wing early in the second half. He finished with 34 points, seven better than his previous high, shooting 10-for-17 from the floor with four 3-pointers.

Braeden Burns also scored 12 points, while Jack Dalgety added nine points and 11 rebounds and Steve DeRegis also kicked in nine points in his first career start.

For Vassar, Shea Fitzgerald scored 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting, Alex Walters had 14 points in 19 minutes off the bench, and Luke Adams added 13 points.
