Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grady Scores Twice in Clarkson's 3-1 Win at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY – Scoring on two of its first three shots in the game, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team built an early lead and never looked back in a 3-1 Liberty League victory over Skidmore College on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-1-0 and 2-0-0 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 1-5-2 and 0-2-0. Clarkson will be at home for just the second time in 2023 when it hosts Hobart College on Saturday.

Neither team had a shot in the first 10 minutes of the game, and the first shot actually came off an impressive save to keep the ball in play near the end line. The ball was played into the corner and came back out about 25 yards from the goal. The next pass was tipped near the top of the penalty area, where Jonathan Dereka chased it down before a decision could be made whether the play would result in a corner or a goal kick. Dereka popped the ball up and back across the box, finding the head of Nolan Grady at 10:23 for a 1-0 Clarkson lead.

Seven minutes later, another broken play resulted in a Clarkson goal. A miss-timed one-timer seemingly rolled out of harm's way, but Logan Drake collected possession on the left wing, roughly 30 yards away. He then sent a cross to the opposite side of the area near the top of the six, finding Grady again, who this time volleyed the ball in with his right leg to put the Knights up 2-0 at 17:19.

The remainder of the half saw the two teams combined for only four more shots, with Clarkson registering three of them.

Skidmore would cut the margin in half about 15 minutes into the second half. The ball was headed away by the Clarkson defense, all the way near midfield, but one slide step allowed Skidmore to quickly counter. A long cross allowed the Thoroughbreds offense to sneak past the Clarkson defensive line at the top of the penalty area, and a one touch off a missed clear saw Max Heberlein pick up the loose ball in front for a score at 60:50.

About 10 minutes later, the Golden Knights had two scoring chances that barely missed as both Eric McKean and Logan Drake hit the underside of the crossbar. However, shortly after that the Knights would pick up their third goal. On a cross on the doorstep of the goal line, a Clarkson player was tripped up while trying to tap the ball in, resulting in a penalty kick. McKean took the scoring chance for the Green and Gold, looking down the entire time and then hitting the ball with his right foot to the left post for a score at 74:59.

Clarkson finished with a 14-5 lead in shots (5-2 shots on goal) and a 5-2 advantage in corner kick chances. Josh Morelli was called upon to make one save, while Skidmore's Luca Bravo Frederick made two stops. Clarkson's Nolan Grady was the first Golden Knight to score two goals in a game since Aidan Subra did so on opening day of the 2019 season against Otterbein.
