Two Late Goals Not Enough for Knights in 3-2 Defeat at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – After a relatively quiet first half saw only a handful of chances on frame, five goals were scored in the final 45 minutes of Friday evening's season-opener between the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and Plattsburgh State, with the final tally unfortunately coming in odd fashion and sending the Golden Knights to a 3-2 defeat.

Clarkson will regroup with another non-league contest at Morrisville State on Wednesday before heading to Castleton next Saturday.

The Cardinals had a string of possession in the early going, taking five shots in the first eight-plus minutes of the contest, though most were blocked before challenging goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup. After the first 10 minutes, Clarkson began to control the midfield and the ball was mostly there or in the Plattsburgh defensive zone. The Knights had two strong chances midway through the half with the first a header by Nolan Grady off a direct kick that was smothered by Plattsburgh goalie Teddy Healy. Roughly nine minutes later a hard shot off the left foot of Colin Wright sent Healy leaping sideway to deny the attempt from 20 yards out, but the Knights were unable to get much offense off the ensuing corner kick.

Other than Plattsburgh's early opportunities, the Cardinals had just one shot in the final 35 minutes of the half, and that was an attempt that sailed over the crossbar by close to 15 feet, as the Knights' defense clamped down upon any Plattsburgh runs toward the goal. Clarkson finished with a 6-4 deficit in shots, but held a 3-1 lead in shots on goal and a 5-1 edge in corners through the first 45 minutes.

Five minutes into the second half, Plattsburgh was able to get a call inside the penalty box despite the ball being behind both players involved, but the hold allowed the Cardinals to get the free chance. Brian Coughlan appeared ready to take a hard shot, but took a little off at the end and chipped one in at the 50:38 mark to make it 1-0.

The Knights may have found themselves a little deflated after the penalty kick, and Plattsburgh scored again three minutes later. A long pass from midfield sent the play into the corner and despite the cross missing its mark, John Hayes was able to hit a hard grounder with his left foot to the opposite post, putting the tally at 2-0 at 53:27.

Clarkson had some trouble getting much going offensively for the next 20 minutes while Plattsburgh had a few wide and high shots miss the mark. However, the Knights cut the margin in half in the 77th minute. A pass went square to the right side and Eric McKean filled the space at the top of the box, calling for the ball. Logan Drake obliged as McKean turned quickly before the Plattsburgh defense could adjust with a shot that went over the top of the Healy's hands to make it 2-1.

Just like Plattsburgh had nearly 30 minutes before, Clarkson utilized the momentum and tied the game less than five minutes later. Off a goal kick, the Cardinals decided to play the ball short before the team's settled closer to the midfield and the strategy backfired, as the Knights quickly stole the ball away and put together some quick passes. At the top of the box, a tap back to Nolan Grady gave the senior some space to work, and he hit a shot into the top corner at 81:02 to tie the game 2-2.

The Knights, however, would wind up losing the contest on a surprising turn. Close to midfield, Brian Coughlan took a free kick and sent a long pass into the box. Kladstrup came out near the penalty stripe to try and punch it away, but some contact changed his trajectory and the ball went straight up and backwards, taking one hop near the goal line and finding its way just under the crossbar at 82:02.

Clarkson had one last scoring chance in the waning seconds with a corner kick opportunity, but after the ball bounced around inside the box for a moment, it was cleared to end the contest.

The Knights finished with a 7-2 edge in corner kick chances and had six shots on goal to Plattsburgh's four, though the Cardinals led in total shots 12-8.
