CU Softball Season Ends in 6-1 Defeat to Union at Liberty League Tournament

Troy, NY – Four runs in the fifth put the Clarkson University Softball team on its heels late in the game, and the Golden Knights were unable to recover, dropping the four-five game of the Liberty League Tournament to Union College, 6-1 at Doris Robison Field on the campus of RPI.

The fifth-seeded Golden Knights saw their season conclude at 20-17, while fourth-seeded Union improved to 15-18 and advance to the double elimination portion of the tournament.

Only a pair of runners reached in the first inning and a half of the game, but Union picked up two runs in the bottom of the second. Ellie Wintringer's liner ended up in the left field corner for a double, and after a strikeout Wintringer scored on a double to right-center by Tatum Perkins, one-hopping the wall for the extra-base hit. Perkins came around on an error to give Union a 2-0 lead.

The Dutchwomen put their first two runners in the bottom of the third, but Devin Fitzpatrick came on to get two strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat. Clarkson used that momentum to push a run across in the top of the fourth. Zoey Kovach singled up the middle to get the rally started, and pinch-runner Elissa Uveino scored from first on Devin Fitzpatrick's double off the bottom of the center field wall. Clarkson appeared ready to tie the game or perhaps take the lead in the next frame, as the Knights loaded the bases, but Amanda Granato induced a pop up to wiggle out of the jam.

Union changed the complexion of the contest in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Granato reached on an error and Tara Hartnett's single up the middle put the score at 3-1. Two more singles loaded the bases and a fielder's choice put the Knights within a hard hit ball of getting out of the inning without any more damage. However, Nahnny Sobetzko singled in a pair of runs and Autumn Duff singled in another, making the tally 6-1 through five innings.

Clarkson did put runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, with the latter having the best chance at producing runs. Katy Aldous and Molly Pezzano were aboard with singles and one out, but a fielder's choice and strikeout ended the game.

Zoey Kovach and Katy Aldous each had two hits in the game for the Knights, while Union's seven hits were spread among seven players. Both Riley Page and Devin Fitzpatrick tossed three innings for Clarkson, with Page taking the loss. Fitzpatrick struck out four in three frames, and Page fanned three. Amanda Granato got the win for Union, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up five hits with three strikeouts.
