Last Second Goal Sends Knights to Defeat at Skidmore, Gain 4th Seed in Conference Tournament

Saratoga Springs, NY – With three seconds remaining in the game, Charlie McFadden scored for the home team as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team dropped its regular-season finale to Skidmore College, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 11-4 overall and 3-4 in conference games, while Skidmore moved to 10-6 and 3-4. With tiebreakers and other action across the league, Clarkson still found its way into the Liberty League's playoffs, gaining the fourth seed thanks to victories over Union College and St. Lawrence University earlier in the year. Clarkson will host St. Lawrence in the four-five game on Tuesday.

The Thoroughbreds rolled out strong on offense in the opening quarter, netting five goals in the first 15 minutes, including a goal by Tim Blue with 16 seconds left in the first period. Clarkson was held scoreless in the second, and Skidmore picked up another goal in that quarter to gain a 6-2 advantage at the half.

In the third quarter, the Knights began to solve Skidmore goalkeeper Collin Kuester, scoring three straight at the beginning of the second half to put the score at 6-5, with Sebastian Geiger's man-up goal at 8:57 drawing the Knights within one. Skidmore scored three of the next four over the final six minutes to extend the advantage to three through 45 minutes, but the Knights' defense buckled down, allowing the offense to chip away at the deficit.

Joe Kelly scored in the opening minute of the fourth, but each team was quiet for the next 10 minutes until Bryan Penney closed the gap to one with his goal at 4:32. When Christian Canino scored with a man-up in the final 90 seconds to tie the game, it appeared as if the contest would head to overtime. Skidmore won the following faceoff and held possession for the rest of the game, including a groundball pick up by Brian Gonsalves with 55 seconds left. Gonsalves's shot with 10 seconds was wide and allowed Clarkson to call a timeout to reset the defense, but Charlie McFadden's quick start off the break ended up in a goal with three seconds left, allowing Skidmore to hold on for the win.

Skidmore outshot the Knights overall (45-41) and in shots on frame (27-24), but Clarkson won the battle of groundballs 45-35. Both goalies excelled, with Jacob Mattice making 17 saves for the Knights and Collin Kuester denying 15 shots for Skidmore.

Sebastian Geiger scored three points with a goal and two assists and both Bryan Penney and Joe Kelly scored twice, with Penney also adding four groundballs. Matt Szwagulinski led the team with eight groundballs.

For Skidmore, Charlie McFadden had four points on two goals and two assists and Gonsalves scored three times. Jack Fitzpatrick won 12 of 22 faceoffs and scooped up eight groundballs, while JJ Jablonowski caused three turnovers and had four groundballs.
