Knights Drop Pair on Sunday to Close out Maryland Trip

Salisbury, MD – Struggling to keep the other teams off the scoreboard, the Clarkson University Softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep in Maryland, falling first to McDaniel College 10-3 and then to third-ranked Salisbury University 23-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights will head to Florida with a record of 1-3, beginning their run of eight games in the Sunshine State on Saturday, March 11th.

Versus McDaniel, the Golden Knights started off with an early lead when Zoey Kovach doubled home Bridget Twaits in the top of the first inning, but McDaniel responded with three in the bottom half of the inning, with the first two coming home on a single to left from Kylie Sears and the third on an infield single by Mandy Butz. Clarkson responded with two in the top of the second when Bridget Kerwin scored on a single from Elissa Uveino, and Bridget Twaits followed with a single to plate Uveino. From that point, however, the scoring stalled for Clarkson, while the Green Terror continued to put up runs. Sears drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Butz hit a sac fly to right to score two in the bottom of the third, and McDaniel added two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to pull away late.

Clarkson's top of the order did most of the damage for the Knights, as Twaits was 2-for-4, Emma Sabourin was 2-for-3, and Zoey Kovach was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Game two was all Salisbury, as the Sea Gulls took advantage of every opportunity with Clarkson making four errors in the field. Salisbury scored seven in the first, tacked on one in the second, put up 12 in the third, and then scored three in the fourth to end the contest early. Clarkson had two hits in the game, one from Twaits and one from Kerwin, as that was all the Knights could scratch against the Gulls' pitching staff.
