Knights Swept in Three at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY - Struggling from the start, the Clarkson University Volleyball team couldn't get its offense going on the road against Ithaca College, as the Golden Knights dropped their second conference meet of the season in straight sets to the Bombers, 25-16, 25-14, 25-14 on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 12-9 overall and 6-2 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca moved to 20-4 and 8-0 in conference matches. The Bombers will receive a bye and serve as hosts for the Liberty League Tournament the second weekend of November. Clarkson's fate for seeding is up in the air, and could come down to a formula regarding winning percentage and strength of schedule to see if it, too, will have a bye or is forced into serving as host for a first round playoff contest on November 7th.

The Bombers finished the day hitting .271, though they sputtered in the first set at just .143. Clarkson, however, had its own troubles, hitting negative in the first and third sets and an even .000 in the second, giving Ithaca points to further its advantage.

In the opening set, Ithaca jumped out to an early lead with six of the first eight points, only to see the Knights narrow the gap with back-to-back solo blocks from Julia Bennett and Olivia Freer. The set was separated by just four points closing in on the midway spot (12-8), but the Bombers scored five of the next six, including a pair of kills from Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu. Clarkson closed within four shortly thereafter thanks to a similar run of five of six points, but Ithaca had enough to hold off Clarkson at the end, getting kills from Faith Sabatier and Gonzalez-Abreu.

Set two saw Clarkson need to call both of its timeouts early, trailing 7-2 and 14-5. Ithaca came out of the second timeout with three more points to expand the margin to 12, but Clarkson rallied back to within seven (21-14) after a kill from Natalie Peacock. That was the last gasp for the Knights, as two kills, a block, and another error closed out the set.

The third was close in the early going, with Annabella Regan's kill putting the tally at 9-7 in favor of the Bombers. A few points later, Ithaca still only led by three (13-10), but a steady string of kills allowed the home team to slowly stretch the gap.

Sara Galante led Clarkson with seven kills and nine digs, while Abigail Spector contributed 14 digs and Annabella Regan also added nine digs. For Ithaca, Gonzalez-Abreu produced 11 kills, Jamie Koopman had nine kills and three solo blocks, Maddie Cox delivered 30 assists, and Julia Costa led the defense with 23 digs.
