Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Strong Finish Comes Up Short for Knights, RPI Prevails 2-1

Potsdam, NY - Down two goals after the first half, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team needed a strong finish to salvage a point, but the Golden Knights continued pressure in the offensive end netted just one score, as the Green and Gold fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 2-1, in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers moved to 7-5-2 and 4-3-0. Clarkson is still in the top six for playoff positioning, but most of the league has a midweek game remaining in conference as well as next weekend, so the playoff picture is still quite unclear.

It didn't take long for the Engineers to get on the scoreboard, as a seemingly harmless throw-in resulted in a goal. About 30 yards up the left sideline, Gabe Terando hurled the ball into the middle of the field at the top of the box, finding Josh Gaudiano. After a quick settle, Gaudiano took aim with his right foot and struck the ball to the far post for a goal, putting RPI up 1-0 less than five minutes into the contest.

RPI scored a second goal in a clearer fashion midway through the first half. Gaudiano was elected to take a corner kick chance, and his cross went to the far side of the box, finding the head of defender Kedy Nana at 27:44, the first goal of the season for Nana.

The two teams were even in shots in the first half (5-5) and that remained the same in the second as each team had four chances. Clarkson controlled play for the final 20 minutes of the game, trying to find some offense to get back into the game. A few shots were denied by Colin Such as Clarkson took some tough angled shots. However, the Knights would cut the deficit in half late in the second half. From the right side, Colin Wright sent a cross through the box and found Eric McKean in a one-on-one situation with an RPI defender, with McKean winning the battle on a header and knocking it in at 86:46. That was the last shot opportunity for the Knights as RPI was content with forcing Clarkson to take throw ins and kept the ball away from the goal.

The two teams finished 9-9 in shots, though Clarkson had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. RPI had five corner kicks to Clarkson's two. Josh Morelli made one save for the Knights, and Such had thee stops.
