Clarkson would host Penn State to start their home portion of the 2023-24 season in front of a capacity crowd at Cheel Arena. The "White-Out" crowd was treated to some late game tension as the Knights mounted a comeback that fell just short.
Penn State would strike first, late in the opening period, when Simon Mack scored at 15:52. The shot hit Roden thru traffic and was able to squeak over the line.
The second period would see the Lions take a 3 goal lead on tally's by Sarlo and Kirwin. The Knights would answer back at 14:48 on the Power Play when
Ellis Rickwood would convert from
Noah Beck and
Anthony Romano.
The Knights would enter the 3rd on the power play and have several quality chances, but were unable to convert. As the period reached near the half way point, the Knights started to put the pressure on Penn St and at 10:04,
Ryan Taylor would make it 3-2 on a feed from Daimon Garnder. For Gardner, it is his first point as a Golden Knight.
Clarkson would pull their goalie with 2:22 on the clock after a time out and a face off in the Penn St. zone. Clarkson would apply pressure and force Penn St. to ice the puck and then use their time out. Off the break, Clarkson would win the draw but a tipped pass ended up in the neutral zone allowing Penn St. to slip the loose puck into the empty net.
Austin Roden would make 40 saves in his home debut. The Knights put 25 shots on net. Both teams went 1 for 4 on their power play chances.
The Knights will face UVM tomorrow at 7pm here at Cheel Arena.
