Knights Fall Twice to Skidmore, 5-3 and 8-5

Saratoga Springs, NY – The home team came through with runs at key moments throughout Friday afternoon's doubleheader, as the Clarkson University Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Skidmore College, falling 5-3 and 8-5 in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights felt to 14-16 overall and 5-9 in the Liberty League, while Skidmore improved to 22-12 and 5-7. Clarkson returns home for a pair of doubleheaders in the next few days, facing Middlebury on Saturday and St. John Fisher on Monday.

Skidmore was able to clump its hits together in the first game to score a handful of runs and put the Knights down in the early going. In the first Megan White led off with a double and then came in on a Katie Anderson single to make it 1-0. An inning later, Melissa Mathias started a rally with a two-out double, and after a walk and single up the middle, a bases loaded hit by pitch forced Mathias home. In the fourth, the Thoroughbreds added one more run as Meghan Robertson singled in a run to put Skidmore up 3-0.

Clarkson got things going on offense in the sixth. Kayla Robert doubled with two outs and then came home on a bouncing single from Tatum Morris. Skidmore responded with two in the bottom half of the inning with a single from Robertson, but the Knights picked up two in the top of the seventh. A ground out from Sam Short allowed Emma Sabourin to score, and Sarah Vaccaro singled in Olivia Zoeller, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Skidmore hurler Lindsey Raimondi was able to wiggle out of the jam to end the game.

Sabourin was the lone Clarkson hitter to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Olivia Zoeller took the loss, striking out seven while giving up five hits and three walks over five innings of work. Raimondi picked up the win for Skidmore, striking out three and giving up three earned runs on eight hits and a walk in seven frames. Robertson went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Mathias scored three runs.

The second game saw Skidmore score five times in the third before the Knights could get on the board with two in the fourth. The Thoroughbreds picked up three runs on a two-run triple from Megan White, who was able to score on her own hit thanks to an additional error. Kaitlyn Hudd then delivered an RBI double and Genesis Delgado singled in a run to help Skidmore out to a 5-0 lead. Clarkson responded in the next inning with a two-out rally. Maddie Brink was hit by a pitch, then lifted for pinch-runner Bridget Twaits, but the extra speed from Twaits turned out to be unnecessary as she and Riley Page trotted around the bases on a two-run homer to center.

Skidmore picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single from Katie Anderson, and two more came around on a double in the fifth by Mathias, making it 8-2. In the sixth, the Knights picked up three runs with Sarah Vaccaro and Kayla Robert produced back-to-back singles to get things going. Devin Fitzpatrick singled in Vaccaro, a bases-loaded walk allowed pinch-runner Molly Pezzano to score, and pinch-runner Katy Aldous then scored on a wild pitch. Although Olivia Zoeller singled to open the seventh, but the Knights were unable to get any closer to the Thoroughbreds in the final inning.

Zoeller and Vaccaro each had two hits in the game, and Page drove in two for the Knights. Only Mathias had a multi-hit game for Skidmore in the second contest, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in.
