Knights Fall in Final Two Games of Spring Trip

Clermont, FL – Some late scoring did in the Clarkson University Softball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Knights lost in extra innings to Buffalo State 8-3 and then dropped an 8-0 decision to Tufts University at Hancock Field.

The Golden Knights closed out their Florida trip with a 1-7 record and will look to regroup next weekend when the team takes on Hamilton College and St. John Fisher College in back-to-back doubleheaders on the road.

Against Buffalo State, the Knights jumped out to an early lead thanks to a solo home run from Sarah Vaccaro in the first inning, as the senior belted a shot to center to put Clarkson up 1-0. The Knights added another run in the fifth when Emma Sabourin's single plated pinch-runner Molly Pezzano to give Clarkson a 2-0 edge.

The Bengals got the two runs back in the sixth inning as Caitlyn Parsons singled in the first run and Abigail Kruse followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. From there, the game needed an extra frame, but Buffalo State unloaded in the top of the eighth to put the game away, scoring six times, including a three-run double from Kayla Wolinski. Clarkson was able to get one back in the bottom half of the frame on an infield single by Olivia Zoeller, but it was too little too late.

Both starters posted solid numbers, as Clarkson's Devin Fitzpatrick went 6.2 innings and struck out three with just a single earned run. Carli Bogue allowed five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in eight innings of work for the Bengals.

In the second game, Tufts got a strong start from Sky Johnson, as she gave up just a single hit and struck out six in five frames. The Jumbos took advantage of their extra opportunities, scoring eight runs, but only one was earned. In the bottom of the first, the Jumbos got their first two runs on an error and then Vanessa Venkataraman singled in another to puts Tufts up 3-0. In the second, Kat Yuzefpolsky grounded out to score one and Meggie Murphy plated another with a single for a 5-0 Tufts advantage.

The Jumbos then picked up three more in the bottom of the fifth to shorten the game, as Bela Jimenez doubled in a run, Michelle Adelman plated another with a single, and then Adelman scored on a fielder's choice to close out the contest.

Olivia Zoeller allowed six hits and three walks while striking out four, but none of the five runs allowed were earned. Emily McBath also struck out two in one-plus innings of work, giving up two hits and three runs, though just one of those was earned.
